For most of her life, Amai has been a loner herself. How she came to be all on her own, she doesn't say, and generally she talks very little of her past. While she actually enjoyed her lonely life and wouldn't say she is much of a people person, she has made it her task to take care of the pride's young.

If it was only Shing, she would have stayed on her own, though. It was Shaka, who first atracted her attention, and she felt for the little furball who had decided to hang on to the least understanding Lion he could have found in the whole of the Sahel. And when somehow the silly bastard had also got himself two girl-cubs, Amai decided she couldn't just stand by and watch them run into desaster.

When she came into heat, just like Ode, Shing chased her away, not to come back unless she was pregnant. For a while she considered to stay away, but Amai had grown quite fond of the others, and so she returned to give birth to her first daughter. As Shing started to get his "moods" she grew more and more protective of the pride's cubs, as one of the few who would not go out hunting.

She felt for little Ime the first time Shaka brought her into the camp, and helped the young male to sneak out bits of food for the cub. When Shing found the cub, though, she could not bring herself to stand between the vicious Tyrant and the defenseless kid, fearing what would become of the other cubs, if she lost her life in the encounter. Thus she supported Shaka even more when the pride urged him to become the next king.

"You wanted to take a nice walk with Amai, but she has the habit of looking over her shoulder every couple of minutes. Ugh, now YOU feel nervous too!"
