Weaving through a sea of browning reeds, you catch his scent before you see him—a lion, red-furred and wet from wading through shallow water. He appears to be on patrol, following the edge of the riverbank along the lip of the levee. Before you can decide whether to attempt a retreat or launch a preemptive attack, the lion's sinoper-amber eyes focus on you. You freeze, bracing for pointed questions at best, claws and teeth sinking into you at worst, but instead you only hear a throaty semi-friendly chuff. The lion regards you curiously, whiskers perked forward in interest. The group of cubs look relieved and less scared, and they all take turns giving Grandpaw Hehet head-bumps!"
