[ fire & ice ]
It wasn't every day a new lion showed up on Amani pridelands, and although Adara was the newest arrival -- and therefore still learning the ways of the pride -- even she knew that the young, slightly handsome, fiery lion approaching Parthenon with an arrogant swagger to his pawsteps was someone to watch.

The lionesses that were only a few months older than her were all pretending like they weren't swooning, their eyes settling anywhere but on him, except.. except Adara knew better. She didn't exactly understand why they were so affected -- he wasn't even that good-looking, was he? -- but she figured their tastes just ran differently from hers. As long as he didn't bother her, she could care less about his presence.

She was sitting close enough to the males to hear little bits and snatches of what they were talking about, something regarding Dominic wanting to do a favor for Klada by training up his sub-male. "It'll be good practice for when I'm king" was the reasoning, and, of course, Parthenon finally agreed. He usually did when there were no obvious drawbacks to the plans Dominic thought up.

Figuring the meeting was over and she could finally stop eavesdropping, Adara stood up to go talk to Elise, who was trying very very hard to distract herself from the new male by ruthlessly devouring a warthog's carcass.

"Hey, Dar," the cocoa lioness greeted right after she swallowed. At least Elise had manners. Adara plopped down next to her friend, head tilting to the side as she realized Elise had finally given up on the pretense of not being attracted to the newest male and was now just blatantly staring at him.

"His name's Arseni," Adara supplied, trying to be helpful. If there were perks to eavesdropping, it would most definitely have to be the power of receiving information before anybody else. "He's staying here for a year or so to get trained up by Dominic."

"A year? Trained up? But he's already so dreamy..."

Adara rolled her eyes, trying to be supportive but failing miserably. "He's alright, I suppose."

"ARE YOU BLIND? You must be blind, Adara. If I wasn't already happy here, I'd move to Klada's pack in a heartbeat if it meant that fine piece of lion was going to be my king in the future."

Grunting noncommittally and not bothering to reply, Adara rolled onto her back, letting the sun warm up her belly fur for a few moments -- until the sun suddenly disappeared. Opening one blue eye, Adara growled low in her throat as the aforementioned fiery male's face appeared in her immediate line of sight, unsettlingly close to hers. "Excuse me," she said tightly, "you're blocking my light."

He gave her a grin she was sure he'd practiced several times in the reflection of a river or something, expecting her to be swept off her paws. But he obviously couldn't read her very well, because as soon as he said "You don't need light, being as bright and beautiful as you are already," blatantly intending on impressing her, Adara was up on her feet in a flash, nose to nose with the newcomer, eyes narrowed angrily.

"Don't even try," she hissed, even more annoyed when that stupid smile stayed on his face like a stubborn piece of dirt.

Without waiting for him to reply, she turned around abruptly, tail swishing angrily as she stalked away, intent on gathering up a few of her other friends to go on a hunt with her. If they didn't want to go, then she was more than capable of handling a hunt by herself.

On a whim though, she looked back, scoffing with disdain when she realized he wasn't even looking at her and was flirting with Elise instead. Well, okay then.

Elise watched Adara and Arseni interact with quiet interest, trying not to look too amused as Arseni tried his best to woo her, and failed miserably. What Adara hadn't noticed was the look he gave her retreating form, eyes focused completely on her until she was too far to see.

"You know, getting on her bad side isn't exactly the best way of winning her heart," she piped up, causing him to jump into the air, a squeak coming from him as he did so. Elise didn't even bother suppressing her laughter. For all the arrogance he displayed with Adara, he really wasn't as suave as he wanted to be. Even though he was still attractive to her, Elise knew when a lion was just interested in one, sole lioness, and Arseni was definitely interested in Adara.

"What do you propose I do, then?" he asked her, his body falling to the floor. Placing his head on his paws, he looked up at Elise with his strange blue and green eyes, the lioness trying her best not to get too flustered.

After a quick glance around the area, Elise inched closer to him, whispering possible plans into his ear while also keeping an eye out for Adara's distinct fiery coat.

"WHAAAAAT? No, I can't be nice!"

Elise's head popped up sharply as a warning. "Arseni!" she hissed, reaching out a paw to slap him on his foreleg. "Don't talk so loud, she's going to hear you!"

"It's not like she has the ears of a hawk or anything," he pointed out, giving her a look.

"Yeah, well... you'd be surprised."

***
A few hours later, Adara came back lugging a baby giraffe behind her, looking very pleased with herself. While the other lionesses fawned over the fact that she had caught this giant carcass by herself, Adara was very aware of a certain heterochromic gaze focused completely on her.

Feeling a little self-conscious, she dragged the carcass to the food pit before slipping into the main den cave, out of sight. Something about him completely unnerved her, a notion that freaked her out so much she would prefer hiding out in the darkness of her sleeping quarters than socializing with her pride-sisters, an activity she actually kind of looked forward to.

Despite all of her efforts to hide though, she really shouldn't have been surprised when his head poked into the den a few minutes later, mane brushing against the top of the entrance as his head swiveled around the space, obviously looking for her as she'd been the only lioness heading this way. Why couldn't he just leave her alone? Expelling an annoyed huff, Adara glared at him from her place near the sides of the cave, the sound helping him pinpoint her position. She wished she'd kept quiet.

"What do you want?"

Without waiting for an invitation, Arseni strolled into the cave like he owned the place, agitating Adara to no end. "Just wondering where my future queen went off to," he replied nonchalantly, paws halting to a stop right in front of her. When she glanced up at him, his face was ridiculously close to hers again, causing Adara's expression to turn into one of incredulous shock.

"Can you stop that?" she grumbled, sitting up and choosing to ignore his comment.

"Stop what?" He blinked at her, eyes completely wide and innocent. She hated that she didn't know if he really had no idea what she was talking about or if he was just joking with her.

So, without bothering to reply, Adara gave him the look. With another haughty huff, she was on her paws, walking towards the entrance of the den, tail twitching with barely suppressed annoyance. "Stop following me."

"No can do," he called from behind her, pawsteps already sounding on the ground, a laugh escaping him as she turned to glare at him some more over her shoulder.

Muttering profanities under her breath, Adara stalked from the den, bursting into a run as soon as her paws touched the dirt of the communal den area. He wouldn't be able to catch her, even if he tried. She had a route all planned out in her head that involved wading in the nearby rivers of Parthenon's jungle territory, therefore blotting out her scent so he couldn't follow her.

It was practically foolproof.

It was so foolproof Adara waded in the river for longer than she'd intended, figuring he'd lost her scent by now.

How wrong she was.

When a wet nose pressed against her side out of nowhere, Adara jumped into the air and snarled as she turned slower than she wanted, coming face to face with Arseni once again. This was getting old. So old. She faced forward without speaking a word to him, her paws briefly touching the bottom of the river as she raised her head up high with dignity and began paddling to the shore.

It was hard trying to climb up onto the grassy banks without looking like a flailing antelope, but she managed, shaking the water off of her coat. Adara was dimly aware of Arseni doing the same, but if possible was doing even worse than she had. This pleased her very much.

"You need help?" she asked him mischievously. The stubborn lion shook his head, determined to get up all by himself.

Shrugging, she left him with a nonchalant "suit yourself," pretending to walk toward the forest before her cub side decided to rear its adorable little head. Quick as a flash, Adara bounded over to him, a paw on his face before he could even register her presence. A slight shift in her muscles and he was falling back into the river, head disappearing under the water for a few seconds before he resurfaced, taking in great gulps of air as he glared at her, eyes narrowed.

"That's what you get for following me." She smirked at him, letting him splutter for words as she turned back around and bounded into the forest, finding the well-worn path that led to her favorite waterfall.

If he chose to follow her after that, then he was just crazy. And if he did follow her, well, she had a waterfall.
