As King Syra approached his one of his beloved lionesses, Queen Star, he noticed something strange about the newly born cub. Her eyes were glowing and it was more than just a subtle, soft glow, they were neither blue like the Queens or starshine like her fathers which was unexpected. He was fascinated as he felt a strong wave of pride overtook him while staring at the new member of the pride.
"You know why she has those eyes right?" Queen Star asked delicately as to not awake the now sleeping cub.
"No, why?" Syra inquired.
"It's a long story, my love. I am actually from a long line of shamans but the ancestors only choose a few of us who they find will treat their abilities with caution, fairness and calamity. The first in our line was my great-great grandmother Jacaranda. Her story has been passed down the generations. It goes, she was unsure of her abilities until one day, when she healed one of the dying lionesses from a snakes poison and her mate from a buffalo that ripped into his side during a night hunt."
"So she just knew?" the King asked. He became very curious about what was to become of his offspring from his Queen.
"No."She replied. "It took her many years to discover the true extent of her new powers and even after that, she had just thought that she was just a lucky one until one day, another shaman, a nomad, had traveled into the pride territory. Jacaranda immediately sensed a strong sense of connection between herself and the newcomer and the shaman had felt it herself. It is believed by my family that that shaman was sent by our ancestors to guide my relative for she let her know her new duties to her pride as in keeping them safe with healing from herbs along with carrying on the line of the healers."
"So then why don't you have the powers to heal?" Syra asked.
"Because my ancestors did not see it fit for me to have the powers or perhaps it was unneeded in that point of time in this pride. Either way, it wasn't my place so there is no need for me to complain."
King Syra couldn't love his new member of the pride more. He saw fit that his duty with her is to help prepare the cub for her new responsibilities and he would be reminded of it every time he stared into her glowing ice eyes.

"Bet you can't catch me Dad!" young Ash shouted as she ran around the pride's acacia tree in the center of the territory. As her father laughed with a booming amount of noise, he began chasing after her only to have an ice-eyed cub on top of him after a few moments with a chokehold around his neck. "You're getting better at this" he proudly noticed as he began to shake her off. By this time, Ash already knew of her future but hadn't started to prepare for her duties yet, she would have to start soon.
After a few months, Ash's mother came to speak with her. She said, "While you are and will become the pride's shaman, you must also learn to be another link in this tightly knitted family because while we also need healer, hunters, protectors and guardians are also very important in this territory. So I would appreciate it if you would be ever so kind to join us on the hunt today, my young one, while you may still be little, there won't be a better time to start."
While the four older lionesses and Ash were padding out to the hunting grounds, the adolescent saw strange smears along ground cover and bushes about the same shade as her eyes. After asking her mother, "What are those weird blue smudges along the ground? Are they left from prey or maybe the hunters tracking the antelope?"
She replied, "I cannot see them" knowing that they were set by the ancestors she added, "Why don't you follow them and see where they lead? We have time until the herds cross the river tonight."
After only a few minutes of following the pre-lit path, Ash stumbled upon an old, unnamed lioness who had said, "So they led you here, I knew I was here for some reason..."
"Who's they?" Ash inquired. So the nomadic shaman explained everything to the young lioness from her family line to her duties and responsibilities. And she also promised to lead Ash and teach her the ways of the healers. She taught her which herbs to use, how to communicate with the deceased and much more until the ancestors felt that their shaman had lived up to her goal well enough so that Ash was prepared. Once the newest pride shaman took up her title, her mentor took up into the ranks of ancestors for it was Jacaranda who was leading her descendant into glory.
