Cubhood was rather carefree for Slatkica. Growing up under Dvenos was enjoyable; white it was no walk in the park with all the learning she had to do, it was filled with good company, quality food, laughter and most importantly, it was safe. She was protected, just like every other pride member, no matter how big or small and how young or old.
The life she knew since cubhood ended when she turned two. Their fearless protector failed to protect himself; he stood no chance against the rage simmering for years inside the hyena-raised lion.
Despite the dramatic shift in her life, Slatkica didn't lose her personality. Right the contrary - it shined through during the uncertain times. Slatkica was there for the ones who needed her the most when they needed her the most. The traumatized cubs who'd just witnessed their first murder and the grieving lionesses who'd just lost their beloved king as well as their family members. Slatkica was the shoulder to cry on and the strong anchor keeping everyone calm. She never even got the chance to mourn her losses herself.
It was her personality that set her apart from other lions, and whereas it triggered nothing but disgust among hyenas - both Kahawia and Shasta despised her - it did trigger something fully unexpected inside Hundar. Admiration … and, could it be, love? He found himself wanting to observe the lioness at all times, be close by in case she needed help or protection from hyenas - he was simply mesmerized by her. So, when his mother announced Shasta would be his queen, Hundar was quick to argue it ought to be Slatkica. Kahawia did not give in, Slatkica and Shasta both argued against such a decision, but for once, Hundar wasn’t backing away when opposing his mother. Against her own wishes, Slatkica became the second queen.
As draining as it became having to be even more mentally strong, with Shasta and Kahawia’s attacks becoming even more frequent and more ruthless than ever before, it was equally as beneficial. Aware of his infatuation with her, Slatkica utilized Hundar to aid not only her but the lionesses, too. She could count on his protection from Kahawia, Shasta and the rest of the hyenas. Though, it only meant Shasta and Kahawia got even more sneaky with their attacks. Too caught up with trying to help her pride, their sabotage had never managed to shake her up. Thanks to Slatkica, the lionesses’ position got better. They received a bit more independence, with Slatkica their appointed leader. Hundar simply couldn’t say no to her, no matter what she asked.
Besides the constant agreement, Hundar showed his affection in another weird way: observing, which more often than not turned into staring. At first bothered by his eyes on her constantly, Slatkica soon got accustomed. Over time, she realized him observing her was just curiosity; the lion who’d grown up among hyenas and had been raised to be a hyena was seeing normal lion behavior for the first time.
Her heart softened for Hundar once she’d figured that out. The ever-so-gentle lioness couldn’t miss the opportunity to try and help him, too. So, when the two of them were left alone, she tried to instruct him how to get in touch with his true lion nature. Even though it was his nature, it’d been repressed deeply and Hundar needed time.
The time that he didn’t have. Before Slatkica could fully rehabilitate him, the young lionesses sick of the regime started a rebellion. Hundar was killed and the hyenas were banished to the outskirts of the territory. Shasta left with them willingly. Slatkica was named the new temporary queen until they figured out what to do next.
Slatkica declined the offer and went on to live out the rest of her life being a gentle guiding force helping the young lionesses rebuild the pride after hyenas. She died from old age after suffering a spinal injury by climbing a tree. Slatkica remains as one of the most beloved lionesses in the Waterhole Pride’s history.
