Majira- Swahili for "summer"

Mabaki was pleased when Majira was born, as she possessed the sparkling eyes and silver-flecked coat he prized above all else. He made no attempt at hiding his blatant favoritism towards her, showering her with gifts, privileges, and the closest thing to affection his black heart could muster. Because of this, Mabaki often turned a blind eye to any unusual or erratic behavior Majira would display. She was often spotted sneaking away from the Pridetree at night or slinking into the territory early in the morning on days where she wasn't assigned to hunt or patrol. Mabaki also noted with mild interest that Majira never fell pregnant, despite the many trips to other prides he sent her on during her heat cycles; this didn't concern him too much, though, since he was still young and he had many other daughters besides.
Nakala, another daughter of Mabaki who resembled him in every way except gender, was filled with jealousy. She had been her father's favorite daughter until Majira was born, and she was determined to find some way to knock her half-sister off her pedestal and reclaim her place as the object of the king's attention. One night, she crept out of the territory after Majira had left in an attempt to find out what she was hiding. Nakala discovered Majira in neutral ground just beyond the border of their territory, lying in the grass and grooming a strange lioness. Though she didn't recognize the stranger, Nakala identified her scent as belonging to one of the few nearby prides that Shaded Stones remained on good terms with. Both lions were on neutral land, and fraternizing with a female member of another pride - especially a friendly one - wasn't explicitly forbidden. Nakala continued to spy on the two in the days that followed, and she soon hit on the realization that the two lionesses were in love. This was exactly what she had been looking for! Majira was refusing to breed with males, thus rejecting her duty to provide strong, healthy offspring of Mabaki's blood.
Completely ignorant of the fact that her secret had been discovered, Majira snuck back to the Pridetree after meeting with her lover under cover of darkness as usual. She slipped into the dens and managed to catch an hour or so of sleep, but was awakened shortly after dawn by the sounds of an argument. Poking her head out of the den entrance, she saw her half-sister Nakala heading in her direction, looking shaken and defeated. Majira asked what was wrong, and to her immense surprise, Nakala burst into tears right in front of her. The two had never been very close - in fact, Majira always suspected Nakala resented her for drawing more of their father's attention - but she took the lioness back into the den and comforted her all the same. She never managed to figure out what had upset Nakala so much, and just chalked it up to another one of the king's bouts of irrational cruelty.
Shortly after that day, Mabaki died, and Shauri soon arrived to claim leadership of the Shaded Stones pride. After some time spent getting to know their new ruler, Majira felt that he could be trusted, and told him of her secret. Shauri reacted supportively, even asking if Majira would want to leave Shaded Stones to live with her lover. Majira told him that neither she nor the other lioness was interested in leaving their pride, and the new king granted Majira leave to go and see her mate whenever she wished, provided she did not have other duties to attend to.
