July had always been picky about how she looked, whether basking in the sun or racing after an antelope. She insisted her fur be clean and shiny, her eyes bright and without sleep bags. This perhaps stemmed from the fact that it was her looks that got her banished from her birth pride. Her Marozi marks were a curse in their eyes, but when she went diving beneath the newly crowned Lucky Strike after a hare, he found them positively stunning. He admired the young lioness' skills and invited her to join his Pride.
She soon rose in the ranks to become the Lead Huntress, and she used her new position to make sure the whole Pride looked as beautiful as she saw it to be on the inside. Every one of her hunters was to be well groomed, with their fur smooth and their teeth white, tails high and ears perked at all times. Posture breeds prosperity!
As she grew older, she still kept her fur clean and brilliant, but she could help noticing the odd silver tuft here and there. She couldn't deny the fact that her muscles ached more than they used to, that she was running out of breath sooner and couldn't quite keep up with the younger females like she did in her youth. She feared that she was going to walk away into the sunset and leave her home for good, like other Elders before her. Lucky, too, hated the thought of losing one of his oldest friends, so he sought a worker of magic spells and potions... a Witchdoctor. It took him a long time, but he eventually tracked one down, and after settling on an offer of five Golden Beetles the mystic cast a spell on July. He told the King that if he fed her a bewitched jellyfish, she would live forever. She would never again carry cubs, but she had plenty of sons and daughters, as well as grandcubs. He told them that she still couldn't hunt, but she rather liked the idea of retirement. It was settled, items were exchanged, and she was captured in a picture of immortality.
Now she lives forever more, resting in the sun and warming her pelt, telling cubs about the tales of her youth and keeping the Pride looking their best. Under her watchful eye, you would be hard pressed to find a single speck of dirt, a single tuft out of place.
