Hui-bin

During the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, Bin was the title given to a Royal Noble Consort of the king. Specifically, she was a level one Royal Noble Consort of the first rank, and was considered part of the Royal Family.

The Royal Noble Consorts of the Bin rank were usually given a personal affix before the title that was meant to describe them. In this case, Hui is said to mean "radiant."

Jang Hui-bin
(3 November 1659 - 9 November 1701)

Crowned Queen - May 1688; Deposed in 1694 with the return of Queen In-hyeon

The best-known Royal Noble Consort of this title was the notorious Jang Hui-bin, Royal Noble Consort to King Sukjong, born Jang Ok-jeong. She was older than the king by three years; Sukjong was crowned at age 14 when she was 17. At some unspecified date after that, she became his favorite court lady and was banished from the palace because the queen dowager feared her influence on the king, since Hui-bin's family belonged to a rival faction. Hui-bin was 24 when she was allowed to return as Jang Suk-won, and as the king's current favorite she quickly climbed the ranks of the Royal Noble Consorts.

She is said to have plotted to gain the title of Queen at all costs, even to the extent of getting rid of the holder of the title, at that time the young Queen In-hyeon, who was childless. Hui-bin actually gained the title upon the deposition and exile of the queen in 1688, only to be deposed in turn when the king reinstated In-hyeon in 1694. She was ultimately executed for treason by being made to drink poison after the death of In-hyeon, because apparently the king found out that Hui-bin had been using black magic to ill-wish the queen, whose health was then already frail. In addition, Hui-bin's son Crown Prince Yi Yun did become King Gyeongjong, but reigned for only four years due to ill health. He died childless and was succeeded to the throne by Yeoning Gun, son of Choi Suk-bin. Gyeongjong's sickness and childlessness is attributed by court records to his mother's mistreatment.
