Sunstreak had been part of a big pride. At the king's death, her older half brother took the throne. He was the son of her mother and the king, born in a previous litter. Sunstreak's own father had been a wandering rogue and therefore she had a very low status in the pride.

Her half brother, the new king, returned home sick one day. Nobody was sure what it was, and he died soon after without a word as to what had caused the terrible illness.

A young adopted brown lion with a tsavo mane, Tahk, was regent for the throne. As the only other full grown male, he would lead until the next trueborn male cub came of age. The old king had found Tahk as a young cub, left to die. He had always been a little runty, but the pride still chose to accept him as their leader, for even he would be preferable to an outsider taking over.

His reign wasn't a good one though. It was Sunstreak's half brother than had been trained to inherit the throne, and Tahk had simply been another pride member, good for nothing more than patrolling and occasionally hunting. The inexperienced male was hardly two years old. He decided to reduce the number of lionesses in the pride to make his job easier.

Because of her impure heritage and low status, Sunstreak was one of the first chosen to be sold. She couldn't go against him though, for he was still the regent. He also seemed a little reluctant to get rid of her since he had taken a liking to the beautiful lioness, but she was no use in the pride. Luckily, after a few days at the trading place, a handsome male bought her. And she if she agreed, she was to be his queen! Happy with him and her new pride, she accepted.
