Suk-bin

During the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, Bin was the title given to a Royal Noble Consort of the king. Specifically, she was a level one Royal Noble Consort of the first rank, and was considered part of the Royal Family.

The Royal Noble Consorts of the Bin rank were usually given a personal affix before the title that was meant to describe them. In this case, Suk is said to mean "clear or pure."

Suk-bin is the only one of the Royal Noble Consort lionesses who has no markings.

Choi Suk-bin
(December 17, 1670 - April 9, 1718)


The best-known Royal Noble Consort of this title was the legendary Korean Cinderella Choi Suk-bin, Royal Noble Consort to King Sukjong. She was a palace slave who was promoted to Suk-won (second level of the fourth rank, or the lowest-ranked Royal Noble Consort), then to Suk-eui (second level of the second rank), then to Gwi-in (second level of the first rank) before becoming Suk-bin.

Choi Suk-bin was the only Royal Noble Consort in Joseon history who came from the slave class, and the only slave girl who became the mother of a king, Yeongjo of Joseon, and the ancestress of three other kings, King Jeongjo, King Sunjo, and King Heonjong.
