Byeol is Korean for "star" and Nuru is Swahili for 'light'.

Nuru was already past her middle age, and had borne and raised four litters, eight cubs, with pride. Everyone was telling her to lie in the shade and enjoy her waning years. And yet when Kimothy asked her if she wanted to journey to a faraway land and be the companion to a young lioness, she agreed.

Upon her arrival in Wangja's kingdom, Nuru was met by her charge, Jungjeon, a graceful lady only just approaching her prime. Jungjeon happily welcomed her to the kingdom and introduced her to the other lionesses, all young and beautiful, especially Suk-bin, Jungjeon's best friend. The most beautiful of all was an aloof lady called Hui-bin, who lay by herself in the shade and did not mingle often.

Jungjeon and Suk-bin showed Nuru around the kingdom, took her hunting, included her in their fun and games, and threw parties for her. But one day, Nuru asked if there was something more she could do than be entertained. She was supposed to be Jungjeon's companion, after all.

That was when she learned that Jungjeon, in fact, was only a title-- the title of the kingdom's Queen Consort. Jungjeon asked Nuru what she wanted most to do. Nuru admitted that she missed taking care of her children and their den. Would the Jungjeon let Nuru take care of her?

And so the Jungjeon in a formal ceremony adopted Nuru into the kingdom, gave her the name of Lady Byeol Nuru, which meant "star light", and named her the official head housekeeper of the palace, answerable only to the Jungjeon herself.
