Dangun Wanggeom

According to Korean legend, the god Hwanung, son of the Lord of Heaven, longed to live on earth. So he came down and founded a city, created laws, and taught men the sciences and the arts. Seeing this, a bear and a tiger asked him to make them human, too. He set them several tasks: the tiger gave up after a while and left, but the bear persevered and was granted her wish. Later on, she became Hwanung's wife and bore him a son, Dangun Wanggeom, who inherited Hwanung's kingdom when he returned to heaven.

Dangun Wanggeom, son of a god and a bear-woman, ascended to the throne of his father's earthly kingdom in 2333 BC and called the kingdom Joseon. Scholars later called the kingdom Gojoseon, or "ancient Joseon", so it would not be confused with the kingdom of Joseon which existed from 1392 to 1897 CE.
