Lariana Sevenblood is essential to the pride, a key to their heritage, their past, but she is apart from them.
The Atlas Wardens shun the ill-blood of the south, the tendencies of kings to wed their cousins or to send their lionesses to lie with demigods. The Wardens preach, above all else, to avoid this, as the gods frown upon it. Kings are overthrown because of this, lionesses are barred from becoming queens.
Lariana is not a queen, though she is a (unwanted) wife of Artemine.
Her bloodline carries the echoes of nearly every Atlas King, from Jabidi to Meriauk, though excluding only Inako. She was once the wife of Apolladine and bore one of their only two children.
Every king, no matter their view of the ill-bred problem, understood that they could not oust this link to the former kings.

Lariana's purpose in the pride now, as she has already done her duty, in bearing a cub by Apolladine, is as the Cryptwife.
Simply put, she takes care of the dead.
King Jabidi was of the east, of Egypt, and his old pride still had the practices of mummifying their dead. Up in the Mountains, instead of drying them with salt, it was even easier to carry the corpse to some high peak, and let it freeze in the cool air and snow.
The practice still exists now, nearly a hundred years later.
And Lariana is in charge of it.
She tends to the dying, she preserves their remains, she keeps the crypts clean and the graves bedecked with flowers.
A grey ghost, shy to the living and long since set in her duties, Lariana avoids most of the pride. She is content as the cryptwife, knowing that she could have just as easily have been expelled from the Wardens for the taint in her blood.
She keeps the scrolls and story-bones of the pride, taking particular care in the recovery and restoration of the crypts damaged in the earthquake during Anako's reign. Her clear records on the kings of the Atlas Mountains, their wives, and their daughters, provide a valuable touchstone for any historian.
