Born of King Kovu of the Clouds and Onxy Dream, Duskflower looked fluffier than most cubs. She was brought into the pride by their current medicine cat, Canaryclaw, who was searching for her successor. Canaryclaw met with many lionesses and ultimately saw potential in two, Silkyspot and Duskflower. After seeing the potential they both had, she convinced King Sunwing to take both into the pride along with a lion she thought would make a great king some day. Canaryclaw spent time with both lionesses individually before making the decision that Duskflower would be the pride's next medicine cat. Duskflower had a long road ahead of her that included intense training and many nights spent looking to the stars hoping for a sign from her ancestors that she was destined to be who her pride hoped she would become. Her ancestral connection came in the form of an albatross during the Rabid Season. It was when her and this bird met that her connection was formed and she could begin the more intense training she would require from Canaryclaw to be a proper medicine cat.
Greyflight the Albatross
Lost and feeling frightened and alone during the season of rabies, the albatross flew through the different pridelands. She never stayed anywhere too long for fear of being infecting with the aggressive disease; she had seen what the disease did, turning the kindest of kings into bloodthirsty lions that would murder their queens during a blind rage. It wasn't until she injured her wing trying to get away from a rabid fox that she'd seen any lions not infected. It was King Sunwing of the Starlight Water Pride that found her hiding in a bush trying to mend her own wing. He approached her cautiously to ensure he didn't frighten her more, he offered her safety and help, so she let him take her to his home. Once back he brought her to Canaryclaw who set the birds broken wing and left her to the care of her apprentice, Duskflower. It was during her first night that Duskflower offered her company.
"What's your name little bird?" The lioness asked gently.
"Where I come from we have no names," the albatross replied quietly.
"Perhaps I can give you one, should you return to the pride we will know you as Greyflight," the lioness said moving closer to her to give her some warmth.
"I feel it suits me. Do you think I could stay here with you?" Greyflight asked.
"I can talk to King Sunwing, but he is kind beyond belief so I don't see there being a problem," she replied before settling to sleep next to her new friend.
Neither of them knew it in that moment but the unlikely friendship was a blessing from the ancestors, and the connection that Duskflower needed would be formed within her new feathered friend.
"After a moment of eager nuzzling, you noticed Duskflower’s long fur standing up and poofing out. She rolled her eyes when you started laughing." ~Mar 28.19~
