In this pride, tradition dictates there must always be a direct descendent of the Royal line to ensure continuity and good fortune for all. Upon his retirement, when the king has produced no suitable 'heir of the blood' to take over the running of the pride, he seeks out the strongest and healthiest of his neighbour's sons to find a suitable candidate to continue the bloodline. That young King-in-Waiting is required to mate with those daughters of the King who can trace their lineage back to the founding of the pride. He must produce at least one healthy cub - either a young Prince to be groomed to the throne, or a sweet Princess who carries the blood required to anoint the next King - or all of his blood must be purged from the Pride and a new King sought. Due to their very existence being in tribute to the shared heritage of the pride, such cubs are forbidden from modifying their bodies in any way - cosmetically or genetically - they can train and hone their natural abilities, and decorate themselves as suits their taste and personalities, but the core of who they are is the legacy of their ancestors. Thus King Aramil begat Princess Copal, who carries the blood of the line and mated to King Styx upon his promotion to the throne.
