They are therianthropes that are able to change from the form of a seal to that of a human by shedding their skin. Oftentimes this skin is stolen by humans that wish to keep them from returning to their life in the sea. Once the skin has been returned or recovered, the selkie will most often leave their human life behind and return to their seal form. This return is final and they cannot go back to being a human even if they wished to do so.
