She was one of three lions to survive the grand extermination, where many pride members lost their lives. Her siblings, mothers, aunts and caretakers all perished from a great fire. As she later learned, the fire was caused by no other lion but her own father, the king of the pride - Kogeta.
Although she was bitter for quite a long while, she never left in fear of never finding her true home, a place where she could be truly welcomed. That didn't mean she stayed inside the now emptied cave. This resulted in Kodiak spending a lot of time around a well-known falcon, his sight unmatched by any bird nor lion.
Even on their first encounter out in the dry wastelands, the bird fellow didn't seem too pleased by her arrival. Instantly, he called out her health for being not up to the typical standards... despite her being an absolutely normal young lioness, maybe a little malnutritioned. Kodiak lingered around, unwilling to accept the diagnosis, watching the falcon do his work in exchange for silver beetles. She witnessed both the horror and the excitation of parents whose cubs were deemed to be abnormal.
Over time, the young lioness learned how to distinguish the "wrong" ones fom the thousands of right ones. She even saw the signs in herself as the fur around her neck grew longer and longer, eventually ending up in a mane. To her father's shock, her mane was almost longer than his own!...
With her new fluff and knowledge, Kodiak returned home, unwillingly helping Kogeta, now named
Lyres in his rule. Yet, due to her mane, the lioness was prohibited from having cubs of her own, due to Lyres' paranoia about the mutation passing down (which, obviously, wouldn't happen either way).
Kodiak, upset due to her father's control over her life, decided to take things into her own paws, and scour the lands for cubs like her - Abnormal, unwanted, abandoned. That's how she became a mother to many - her skill, passed down from the falcon, allowed her to spot such cubs. Many of which she took home.
That's where Kodiak is right now - a mother figure to 5 cubs, 4 of which suffer the same childhood issues she did.
