Wheatie was born with a single brother to an older lone lioness. Her mother was weakened and unable to hunt, and eventually died after a few months. Wheatie and her brother were left to fend for themselves and to try and survive all on their own. They were able to travel and find half-eaten and rotting bodies before any hyenas or vultures swooped in, and munch on food left by human. They survived like this, all alone, for about six months. They were still weak but they believed they would live as long as the two littermates stuck together. However, one day the two cubs found a drowned elephant carcass, and they instantly dug in. It had been a long and hot day, and they weren't paying attention, which is how the hyenas had been able to sneak up on them. Suddenly, they had been surrounded by hyenas, all nipping at them and trying to kill the cubs. Wheatie's brother told her to run as he distracted him, which she did as her brother was ripped to shreds, and she fled into the tall grass. She became deathly terrified of hyenas. For the next few years, she managed to learn how to hunt on her own, though she still relied mostly on scraps, racing away at the very yip of a hyena. She continued to travel, lonely and easy to impress, yet her plain looks made most lions turn away from claiming her. So that was how she lived for a long time.
One day, Wheatie had been running away from a group of hyenas who had caught her in the middle of eating something rotting and decided she would be better food. They were hot on her tail, but then a young lion jumped out at her pursuers and fought them off with all of his might, nearly collapsing himself. Wheatie was very impressed by this lion, who turned out to be named Burnt Stars. With little convincing, he invited her to be the first lioness of his new Pride and she happily accepted. Soon after joining the Pride of the Dragons, she became pregnant with Burnt Star's first cub, giving birth to the first cub born within the Pride. This first cub was named Comet, and Wheatie happily took over the job of a broodmother in order to protect each cub in the Pride.
