A punishment from the gods, the elder's had said to Deer'Thorn, for being an unfaithful lioness, going behind her king's back to have cubs with another. Those above had taken the cubs produced from the meeting before they got their first breaths, and left the weakest behind so that she could watch the poor thing fade away, Quail'Cub, to make learn from her mistakes. And yet, Rouge'Mirage, despite knowing the lioness had slipped away to another king while under his rule, decided to give the cub a chance, to try and let her live.
The elders claimed she'd never make it through the winter, the cold would seep into her small body and freeze her to death, and yet, she prevailed. They said the heat would end her short life, leaving her shriveled up and gasping as it took her away, and yet, it never did. Months passed, and the cub grew. Her ears and eyes opened, allowing her to know the world that had welcomed her, to learn her mother's voice. Despite her weakness, she survived and grew to an adolescent, learning and hunting with the lionesses of her pride, with her mother.
But something went awry one day as the troop went to hunt. Quail paw slipped away on her own to try and get a kill by herself, to prove herself to her mother and the other lionesses in the pride. To the elders who called her a punishment. But she failed. In her desire to prove herself to others, her own life was taken by the prey she'd intended to kill. When she was found, her mother was devastated, her soul crushed as she found the lifeless body of her cub. The elders turned their noses, knowing this would happen eventually, it had merely taken time.
The gods watched from above as the pride laid her to rest, buried the cold body of who was merely a cub alongside warriors and hunters. They took pity on the young soul and her family. Many moons passed, and with time, Deer'Thorn aged until her eyes were dull, her bones creaking during her last hunt. Eventually, she joined the elders, and grew ill. One day, her sickness was stronger than ever before, nothing done by the medic could weaken it. She wouldn't last. The spirit that came for hers took physical form when it arrived in the den, frightening those who watched. When she approached the elderly lioness, a light was brought back to her eyes meeting those of the one who would take her, a light she lost many moons ago.
"... Quail'Paw..." |The old lioness croaked, reaching for the ethereal being before her. The pride watched as the divine pressed her muzzle to that of the lioness, ears straining to hear as it muttered words of comfort to her, before watching in awe as her soul rose from it's shell. Pressing her head to the divines own, a soft "Thank you." passed her lips before she turned to ascend above, joining her lost cubs in the beyond for eternity. After the soul had departed, the divine lingered to help rest what remained, staying by the grave far longer than any other. But what words were heard as she finally stood to leave the husk of the once powerful lioness...|
"I'll protect them, mother."
