LORE:

It wasn't always like this. Not in the beginning.
No, Kiumbe used to be normal, you see. She was once an everyday little cub, who would run, play, wrestle with the others... Everything was normal. Everything was... Great.

As you can see, great didn't last forever. For one fateful day while play wrestling, Kiumbe's powers within unleashed itself in full. She didn't mean to do it, but all the pride knew saw was the burning flames on Kiumbe's paws, and the nasty burn set on the face of the screaming cub. She got many looks- many awful, distrustful looks, and from then on things changed.

She couldn't control her newly discovered powers, and she would constantly accidentally set fire to and burn things accidentally. Nobody ever believed they were accidents, though.

Her name wasn't always Kiumbe. Did you know that?
No, she had a name that meant more, much like everybody else. They changed her name when her powers came through. Kiumbe. It means... Creature. That's how everybody saw her... Just a creature.

She could barely take it by the time she reached adulthood. She still struggled to control her powers- and her emotions did not help things. The more intense the emotions, the more unpredictable the flame... And today she had a full breakdown. Her fire unleashed in full force, blasting her pride into smoke and ash, the surrounding dens and territory covered in bright dancing fire.
She couldn't stay. She couldn't. Not after this.

She turned and she ran as far as she could, and she didn't stop until her legs burned from the distance.

Flavor Text: She ended up in Kusanya, the place her powers were to do the most damage. The forests were lush, green, bright... The trees dancing in the wind. She could barely think about how she needed to keep moving before her legs eventually gave out on her, and she went down with a yelp, hitting her head before everything went black.
When she came to, a strange lion stood over her... They introduced themself as Essi, the lord of the lands. Their pelt and wings shining like stars, their eyes piercing, yet gentle.
They allowed her to spend a few days in their territory for rest. As long as she needed, but-... She couldn't stay. They couldn't know of her powers. It was a wonder she wasn't burning everything right now. As much as she wanted to spit at them, to say no, to run off-... She knew she was exhausted. She needed rest and recovery. She hesitantly agreed, but the entire time was spent as far from the pride as possible, side eyeing everybody around and snarling when anyone got too close.
Luckily, she didn't burn this territory... This time.

A few days time, and she would be on her way.

Flavor Text: Kiumbe woke up at night after a nightmare and noticed that the grass around her body was burnt. No, not this again... She had to get away from these lions before something worse happens.
She got up in haste and silently left the pride's territory. Lioness was walking at a fast pace until dawn, that's when she decided to stop for a while. She tried to calm emotions swirling inside her, as they were a cause of this incident.
When she finally calmed down a little, she focused more on the environment. Kiumbe smelled something that made her stomach rumble, a fresh meal? She was obviously hungry after walking for hours so she hesitantly followed the scent. The scent found her first, it turned out to be a whole lioness party who had just taken down a huge deer. They were hostile to Kiumbe at first, but when they saw no threat in exhausted lioness, they introduced themselves and told her to come to their pride for a few days.
Kiumbe didn't want to, she really didn't! She told herself she was just going to eat there and leave, but she ended up being there for a few days. The reason for that was a magical lion from this pride. He was still young, but he knew how to control his powers. He was called Coral and he could summon water. offered to help Kiumbe understand and help her control her own powers. It didn't work and she ended up putting fire on everything. Coral was always fast to put out her fire though. She didn't interact much with aby other lions. She even offered her help with hunting, but lionesses refused. Kiumbe didn't bothered talking to anyone more than she had to after that.
She was almost sad to leave, she felt a little saver when she had a water controlling lion at her side. She set off after a week anyways.

Kiumbe blinked away weariness as she forced herself to put one paw in front of the other. She had to keep moving. Yet the ache in her throat wasn’t going away. She hadn’t found water in days now, every potential source she stumbled across being completely dried up. Coughing as she stumbled her way across the fields of dry grass, hoping her power wouldn't light it all ablaze she jumped as she heard a voice a few tail-lengths away from her. Turning around to stare at them, claws sliding out to grip the ground, how had she let herself get snuck up on like this?
“Are you okay?” she stepped back as the silver lion spoke again, his cloudy blue eyes scanning over her with concern. Watching him warrily he offered to lead her to a waterhole and she reluctantly agreed, trailing slowly after him, the dryness in her mouth too much to ignore. Quickly lapping up the water soon as she arrived at the small pond she watched the silver lion out of the corner of her eye. When she finished he told her his name was Echoing Stars and offered to let her stay in his pride for a while. Sighing, she decided to accept the offer, still exhausted after traveling for so long and with water harder to come by.
She hung around the outskirts of the pride, watching them hunt or chatter with each other from a distance and briefly talking with any lions who did come her way. While resting under a tree one day she lost control of her powers again, flames flying from her paws and landing on the grass nearby. Within an instant it was fully ablaze, dry from the many weeks without rain, and spreading out of control. Scrambling to her paws she fled from the fire as it raged around her, quickly devouring all the grass in sight. Coughing from the smoke she kept running, feeling the heat of the flames behind her as she pushed herself to run faster still. She felt her wings unfold, carrying her upwards and soon enough she was flying above the flames, safe from their unrelenting hunger, yet the creatures below weren’t so lucky.
Hovering above the fire, she stared out over the burning savannah, her heart sinking at the destruction… all of this was because of her. Not again, how could she let this happen again, blinking back tears she wondered how many territories she’d cause to go up in flames. She wasn’t even sure if Coral would be able to put such a massive fire out if he was here. She should have never stayed here. Turning she flew off, riding a current of hot air into the sky and ignoring a stabbing pain in her skull. She swore she could hear a lion calling out for her to wait but she didn’t dare look back. They probably wanted her dead now after causing all this, and on the slight chance they took pity on her, she still couldn't bear to face them.

Flavor Text: She didn’t know how long it’d been since she started flying. Her wings ached, but she still didn't have the courage to land, to face what she’d done. But it didn't matter how she felt, as she was quickly losing energy provided by the adrenaline from causing yet another accident. Against her will, gravity was pulling her back to the earth, and the dry, dry savannah. Though, in her descent, she could've sworn she saw green against so much dryness.

Taking another look, there was, in fact, a strange area of very lush and dense forest up ahead. Too scared to destroy one of the only rich areas in the savannah, she attempted to make a swift right turn. Though, she lost the current she was riding in doing so, and came off balance mid-air as a result.

Before she knew it, she was practically- no, was- tumbling right for the ground. Realizing there was quite possibly no way to get out of this, Kiumbe could only close her eyes and hope for the best…

-

After a long while, she awoke once again. She could only feel scratchy and dry grass against her back, and a cool breeze against the rest of her. Well, at least she only thought that's what she felt. After a pause, she felt a harsh pain in her back leg, and the rest of her ached as she forced herself upwards and awake.

She opened her eyes after sitting up, moving to assess the damage of her fall. Quite miraculously, her back leg had seemed to take up most of, if not all, of the fall. Though it was clearly broken, unfortunately.

She bites back a wince of pain once realizing how dry her throat was, and nearly simultaneously she realizes how hungry she feels.

It practically washes over her all at once- that she's thirsty, hungry, and alone with a broken leg, practically being a death sentence during the dry season. Regardless, she attempts to stand.

A previously unknown (and strangely) smug chuff rings out from behind her, making her jolt forwards before spinning around and letting out a loud, terrified snarl. The lion in front of her hardly looks threatened, and only looks as smug as they sounded.

“Calm down, would you?” He speaks, sounding even more full of himself.

Kiumbe already does not like this lion's demeanor.. and the fact that they looked like a bunch of fruits mashed together didn't help either. It almost hurt to look at, honestly. Speaking of hurt, she is quite rudely reminded of the pain in her back leg, moving to relieve pressure on it.

She attempts to open her mouth to growl a response, before the strange lion speaks again, cutting her off.
“No need, I assure you. You're lucky you stumbled upon me, as I'm practically the best leader around these parts..” The lion lets out another smug chuff, trailing off before quickly refocusing- “Anyways, my pride will help you. Now, how to move you..”

-

Kiumbe has found herself situated in a cave by that strange lion. She takes in the dampness of it, almost finding comfort in it. Well, she would have if she wasn't surrounded by one little issue.

She was entrusted with a small cub. The only condition of her stay being that she had to look over this small, hopeless, vulnerable, being. She didn't know how to feel as it curled against her paws, seeking their dangerous warmth so unknowingly.

It conflicted her deeply, not wanting to allow herself any happiness. Not allowing her to think of using what she was cursed with for good- if it could even be used in such a way. She tried pushing the small cub away, but it always followed.

-

It had only been a handful of days, each spent being awoken by this small little cub.

Their little squeaks and mewls rousing her from slumber early in the morning, when the sun's light only just penetrated the cave's entrance- so she named her Nuru, the word meaning light. After the cub would awaken her, she'd spend a good few minutes licking knots out of its soft fur, being careful to keep them a safe distance from her paws.

Though, it was quite different this morning.

As the cub had moved to shimmy closer into her paws- it happened yet again.

Her fire had flared up out of nowhere, and within seconds, Nuru let out a loud yelp, quickly attempting to dash away from the now starting flames from her paws. Nuru had quickly darted into one of the cave's water puddles as Kiumbe panicked as well.

Thankfully, the damp stone of the cave floor did not allow the spreading of the flames.

But all Kiumbe could think about was how she hurt another yet again- not to mention a small cub. She didn't even stop to realize how Nuru was only minimally hurt, the heat only spooking the cub and becoming harmless due to the water now surrounding it.

Terrified that she’d be punished or even killed for harming one of the prides cubs, under that early morning sun, she dashed out of that cave, and started flying again. Fresh rain had seemingly just come through, at least making it harder for her fallen embers to light.

With it being so early that the pride was still asleep, she navigated out of the strangely wet rainforest as fast as she could- eventually breaking back out to open savannah. She resumed her flying from only a few days prior as her flames died down again, leaving the rainforest and the small, burnt cub behind, seemingly ignoring her still broken leg due to even more adrenaline.

She vaguely remembered crashing somewhere in a charred forest, but when she woke up that was not the case. It was a lush forest. Startled, she sat up, flames sparking. But nothing caught and burned…huh? A lioness carrying an African Cucumber dropped it and nonchalantly put out the sparks with her paw. “Glad to see you’re feeling better.”
She was too tired to bothering trying to control it, the flames were all over her now, but the forest wasn’t affected. But there was a fear it wouldn’t last long, she tried to get up but fell. “….easy, easy.” Not even questioning the wings, just starting to clean them.
“…where- where am I?” She had to get out of there before she burned the whole place down.
“…Ehh, Säcred Lands. Don’t get your tail in a twist. Your magic doesn’t affect the magic of the land..oh. My name’s Peony, by the way. Hyacinth, get over here. When you’re feeling up to it, my apprentice can take you on a tour.”
-a few days later-
A younger lioness- Hyacinth, the Healer had called her, showed her around, they didn’t talk much, she didn’t trust them, didn’t trust this weird place where the magic was beyond the control of lions. Peony said it was fine, but she didn’t know Kiumbe’s magic. How wild it was. She went to see the spirits- Raezya and Hermione- more often than not. They showed her more about her powers and taught her how to control them.
Kiumbe settled in okay. But there was always that fear. Time and time again her power had shown it could not be contained. That night, she had a nightmare. She awoke with a gasp to find the forest flaming around them. Hyacinth was worried but she came to her anyways. “Hey- can you stop the fire now..?”
“…I can’t- go away before you get hurt-“ She tried to limp out, but was blocked.
The apprentice must have had some power of her own, she batted Kiumbe on the face until she listened..”Suck it up. You’ve got this completely in control. It’s your magic! Take a deep breath. We’ve faced worse than a couple of flames, but it’s not helping. Just focus.”
Flames and Fire and Gold and Sun and Light-
She blinked and it snapped. Everything was awash in a divine hue. But now she knew she could control it. The flames died down, down, down, back into her like some magnet. “….Huh..you did it. Not bad.”

Afterwards, thanking True and Peony, she left. She had stayed long enough, learned to control her powers more, but it was time to go elsewhere. The flames inside her wouldn’t always be so compliant.

Kiumbe wandered through the tall grass, her head hanging low as the sun beat mercilessly upon her exhausted body. She had been travelling for days with no sight of larger prey or carrion and she was tired of surviving on whatever small rodents she could find. "I must be going in circles at this point... It feels like this field never ends!" She grumbled through gritted teeth as she unfurled her wings and took to the skies, hoping to find anything out in the distance, but to her dismay, she couldn't even see where the field ended. With an annoyed groan, she landed on a dead tree, her paw rubbing her temples. She had long exhausted her wings and could walk no further due to the aching muscles burning under her skin. "I'll rest here for now. There's no sense in making myself dehydrated on top of it all." With no other choice, she lay down on the highest branch out of reach from anything on the ground, her eyes focused on the horizon until nightfall painted the sky, its sea of soft, speckled lights lulling her to sleep. Although there was no sight of dangerous animals up to this point, Kiumbe knew better than to put herself in a vulnerable position.

~Hours later~
For once, Kiumbe felt at peace. She rarely managed to sleep without being startled awake by a nightmare, setting her and her surroundings aflame, but the vast empty land with its soft rustling of the grass seemed to have an aura of serenity in a strange way. This didn't last very long though as a subtle shift below pulled her out of her slumber. The momentary calm quickly subsided as uncertainty took over. Kiumbe let out a low growl, staring down at the grass and spotting the movement amongst the dried blades. "Whoever you are, show yourself!" The lioness bared her fangs at the unknown threat, her wings spread out in an intimidating gesture. Silence. Not another sound was made for a moment, only unnerving her further. However, before she could speak again, a creature poked its head out of the grass, looking at her with wide, curious eyes. It seemed like some sort of canine, but... blue? "Are you lost?" The canine's voice was soft and uncertain in the presence of a larger predator. Seems harmless enough, but Kiumbe remained cautious, focusing on the timid thing. What kind of creature was this? It looked like a wolf but seemed smaller than any she had seen before, with large ears and a bushy tail that seemed more belonging to a fox. The canine shifted uncomfortably under her glare, slouching their shoulders as they glanced to the side. "Hey... It's not safe to stay out in the open this late. Do you want to come with me? I know someone who's always happy to welcome new company." Kiumbe's snout scrunched at the creature's offer. She was conflicted, too tired to fight if she needed to, but not too keen on the idea of staying where she can eventually be spotted. Reluctantly, she agreed to follow them, their large ears perking up as the lioness grunted and jumped down beside them. "I'll take that as a yes. Come with me!" Standing at a distance, she watched them bound off ahead of her with a distrustful glare, but what other choice does she really have right now?

That was what she thought, at least. Days had passed since she had arrived at a large pride hidden deep within the local forest. This pride didn't appear to have a name of any sort with its population consisting of lions alongside other varying species. Although it all seemed welcoming, Kiumbe had her doubts, unsure of whether animals of such different species can really coexist in one group, especially with some that seemed to wield their own forms of magic. It was all a bit hard to believe, but it at least provided her a place to rest her tired limbs.

As days crawled to a month, Kiumbe found that she was becoming a bit too comfortable with the atmosphere despite her initial hesitance. She had even begun to grown some fondness towards the strange canine that brought her there, albeit mainly due to their insistence on following her like a lost puppy and making a game out of hiding under her wings. The serenity of the atmosphere had helped to limit the chances of her startling enough for her flames to engulf the area, however, she did not feel very comfortable remaining in a place filled with significant lush. Not after what happened so many times before. Not until she can gain more confidence in her ability to control it. It had already been long enough... much longer than she had been planning to stay, and so, it was decided that she would take her leave silently during the night; a task that didn't prove to be as easy as she thought, as who else would be alerted by her movement but the canine?

Kiumbe assumed that they were going to stop her, but she didn't get a word out, pausing as she spotted something dangling in their jaws; a pair of cylindrical trinkets that she had recalled seeing stashed away in their little hoard. "I really wish you could stay, but I figured I'd at least see you one more time before you leave and give you a parting gift." Gently placing them at her feet, they stepped back, ears tilting down upon noticing Kiumbe's confused gaze on the trinkets. "I don't really know what they are either, but... maybe they can come in handy in some way! Maybe you can store water in them?" Kiumbe sniffed at the empty bottles with intrigue, picking them up by the handles and leaving the canine with a grateful nod before parting ways. She could already sense the sad look on their face as her silhouette faded within the dark cover of the forest, but she knew that this was for the best. After all, there was no telling how long she would be able to suppress this curse; how long it would have been before something triggered it in a way that she couldn't control. Not yet, at least. Maybe someday, they could meet again.
