Jay was born outside of Reedclan, still known as Clearpool back then. She wandered onto the territory and bumped into Rainstar while he was out having a walk. Jay had been recently orphaned and she was starving and in no mood to leave the lush prey-filled land she had stumbled upon. Despite Rainstar's threatening demeanor, Jay had spat and snarled at him. Rainstar found himself more amused and impressed rather than angry. He offered her a place to call home and although she was wary, she accepted the offer. Rainstar picked her up by her scruff and hauled her back to camp.

Jay was basically old enough to be apprenticed. The clan was confused but interested when Rainstar presented her at a clan meeting. He gave her the apprentice name of Jaypaw and she was to train as a guard under Heatherstem. Jaypaw had an odd way of doing things, as Heatherstem would soon figure out. She always thought outside of the box. When she wasn't stuck doing apprentice duties and guard training, she was weaving together contraptions but she mostly kept those to herself. Rosecub had a delayed apprenticeship and Jaypaw taught her moves and techniques in secret. She watched as the new apprentice, Rosepaw, had received her apprentice name. Rosepaw had felt out of place and she mostly stuck to herself, of course with exception of Jaypaw...

They had received their new names, Jayflight and Rosesong. Rainstar had died and Stagshade had taken over as Stagstar. Things were good for a while.
