// NIGHT AND BIRCH BECOME MATES \\
Night drew in the wonderful scent of the savanna, the scent of dusk. She turned her head to Birch's Wind, who had his eyes closed, clearly experiencing the same feeling of perfection as her. This was the right time.
- "Birch?" She asked
Birch's Wind woke up from meditating and turned to look at her with his gorgeous green eyes
- "Yes, Night?"
- "I have been thinking about this for some time, and I was just wondering if we could..." Nervously, Night felt her confidence fade away.
- "If we could..." She tried again.
- "Could what?" Birch asked.
Night heard his voice was calm, but the little glint of amusement in his gaze was freaking her out.
- "If we could be friends." Night blurted out.
- "I thought we were already friends?"
- "Y-yes, of course!"
- "But then why-"
- "Because you're special to me. You stand apart from the rest of the males. I love your smile, the beauty of your soul, your will to help others, and you're the only one I could think of .... of taking as my mate. I'd really like it if you could.... could..."
Birch's Wind's green eyes shone in the light of the setting sun. They seemed to stare into the very depth of her eyes, but Night held his gaze. Birch leaned closer and laid beside her, his pelt pressing to hers. He then pressed his muzzle to her ear. Night purred.
- "I was starting to wonder if Dark Forest would have to ask for you." Birch chuckled.
- "She is my best friend. She would have. But it wouldn't be the same thing."
- "But you know I would would present you as my mate any day"
Night turned her head to him, and pressed her muzzle to his.
- "Thank you for being by my side. I... I..."
- "I love you too."
They wrapped they tails together and gazed at the now visible stars as the sun sunk into the horizon.
// BIRCH AND NIGHT HAVE AN ARGUMENT \\
Nightly Cheetah and Birch's Wind were sitting at the edge of the camp where the pride couldn't hear them, discussing everyday stuff, like how the adolescents were doing at hunting or rumours that were going around.
- "Dewy Flower is becoming quite the huntress, you know. At first, she felt bad for the prey and didn't want to hunt them. Now... She's finally understood the circle of life." Birch said proudly. "She's practically made herself famous among the prey now!"
- "That's.... great!" Night purred.
- "I'm so proud. And she's MY cub, you know ? I barely get how I made a cub so skilled. Maybe it was all Autumn Stripes" Birch laughed.
- "Hah... Yeah" Night answered. She had a really weird feeling in her stomach. Jealousy?
- "You okay, Night?" Birch turned to look at Nightly Cheetah with his big, green eyes.
- "No, no... nothing, really."
- "You can tell me."
Night sighed. "It's just starting to feel really weird, you know?"
- "What is?"
- "That you have other mates than me."
- "What? But it's never been a prob- - - But that's just... how we do it?
- "Times can change."
The atmosphere was getting really tense.
- "You call me your mate, right?" Night sighed.
- "Yes, of course! How can you of all living creatures doubt that?" Birch exclaimed.
- "Well, you have cubs with every female in the pride. How can i see past that?" A glint of doubt was forming in Night's eyes.
- "Honey, that's how lions live! That's how we've always lived! But you will always be my true love despite my offspring having different mothers!"
- "You even had cubs with Dark Forest! My 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱. Do you see the problem?" Night's soft voice was turning into a growl. Birch pinned his ears.
- "No! I really don-" Birch noticed he was raising his voice and immediately stopped talking.
- "We clearly have a very different view on this, Birch." Night's glaring eyes shone in the night. "Goodnight."
Birch watched her walk all the way back to the cave until he couldn't see her anymore. He sat down for a few minutes, wondering what had just happened. Was Night really that mad about this matter? He couldn't change his entire life just for her. The argument had been pretty short, but Night still seemed pretty mad. Would she ever be able to adjust to this lifestyle? Birch didn't know. Not wanting to go back to the pride, Birch just stayed where he was, watching the stars.
They shone like small, white eyes in the sky.
The following weeks were not like the ordinary. Every time Birch approached Night, she just gave him a short, cold gaze and quickly padded away. With time, she even started completely avoiding his gaze. She got up and walked to the edge of camp every time he got back from patrolling. She was completely avoided his prescence, even though she was in his pride.
// NIGHT AND BIRCH STOP BEING MATES //
Birch was just getting back from cub training and was handing over the cubs to the broodmothers. He was just finising grooming Snowbird's ear, when he heard a distant growl that he didn't recognise. He pricked his ears and turned his head to the direction he'd heard it from. It seemed like it was fairly far into the territory...?
"What is it, Birch's Wind?" Turtle's Claws said curiously.
"Did... did you hear that?" Birch said in a nervous voice.
"...No? Are you okay, Birch?" Turtle replied.
"it sounded like an enemy lion. Or... something else. It also sounded unfamiliar, and it seems like it has gone quite far into our territory. If it is just a normal lone male, then why would he walk so far in? And HOW? Why haven't any of our lions chased him off?" Birch's voice shivered more and more for every word he spoke.
Turtle gave him a concerned look. "Maybe you should take someone with you and go check it."
Birch shook off his nerves. "You're right. Dark Forest!"
The beautiful, speckled lioness was talking to Thunder Fang a few tail-lengths away when she turned her head to him. "Yes, Birch?" She shouted back.
"Come with me. There's something suspicious going on in the territory. I think some lone male has snuck way too far in for his own good."
"Well, he'll live to regret it!" Dark laughed. "The scars are going to last his whole life. Unless he runs and flees!"
Birch chuckled. Dark Forest brushed past Birch and walked out of camp alongside him. Birch suddenly got an odd, fluttering feeling in his stomach when she walked close. The fur on their shoulders touched and ruffled each other.
Birch's cheeks were getting hot, so he shook his pelt and picked up his pace, walking ahead of her.
Suddenly, a sound was heard, an unfamiliar one, just like the last one. it sounded different this time, though...
"Was that the sound you heard?" Dark asked with wide eyes.
"Yeah, but it sounded more like a growl last time. This one is closer to a purr, or something like that. We must be getting closer. We wouldn't have been able to hear a purr all the way from camp." Birch replied.
"But why would an enemy male be purring on our territory?" Dark wondered.
The question suddenly sounded weird when they said it out loud, and they both laughed.
"Oh, I know!" Birch laughed. "Maybe he's-"
They suddenly got to a shade of large trees, in the middle of the dry lake. Birch and Dark both got down and started crouching towards the dead, high grass. From behind a rock, laughter and purrs could be heard clearly. Birch's Wind listened closely to the voices and could to his own surprise make out two of them. One belonged to a male, a voice he'd never heard before. But the other one untoubtedly belonged to a lioness, and this voice sounded very, very familiar.
"D-Dark?" Birch said in a low voice that sounded more nervous than he wanted it to.
"Yes, Birch?" Dark whispered while looking at him with her unusual, black eyes.
"That... voice."
