As Marigold's footnotes say, she's the daughter of Aurelius, one of my friends old kings. Recently, ne kinged a lionesses who's lore is Aurelius reincarnated. So we both headcannoned that they feel a distance connection and neither understand why. So this is a story about it :3 1130 words, if anyone actually decides to read this, thank you and enjoy!
“Are we almost there?”
Marigold asked, keeping her nose low so she could follow the scent of the Queen to find her way.
“Almost Marigold.”
She replied joyfully.
Marigold was… uncertain, to say the least, of why Roseica wished for her to accompany her to meet the one of their allied prides new Queen, but she did as wished, even though Rose had made it clear it was up to her whether to come or not.
As they continued through the plains, Rose made sure to keep a clear path between the grass for Marigold to follow. Having no eyes came with its drawbacks after all. Marigold trusted Roseica, and she didn’t take it lightly, making sure to assist whenever possible.
Eventually, after a few more minutes of walking, Marigold raised her head slightly, the scent of other, unfamiliar lions filling her nose.
“Almost there.”
Rose reassured, making sure Marigold knew those unfamiliar scents were those of friends.
Marigold started feeling wind hitting her northward side, knowing now they were out of the grass, out of the space left between territories.
“Hold on Marigold.”
Roseica offered, directing the end of her tail to Marigold for her to lightly hold onto. As they were now in a crowded space, with multiple scents, following Rose by scent would no longer work. They often resorted to this in similar situations, in places Marigold was not familiar with.
Marigold, after gently taking the tuft of fur at the end of Roseica’s tail between her jaws, followed the gentle tugging that followed as Rose started to walk.
After a few more minutes of walking, Roseica paused, with Marigold accidently walking into her rump, unaware she’d stopped and mumbled a quiet apology, quite nervous.
“Quite alright Marigold. Why don’t you wait here, yes? I’ll go introduce myself and bring them to you.”
Marigold nodded, always nervous in unfamiliar spaces such as this, especially ones with as many scents as this.
She heard Roseica walk away, the only familiar scent disappears under her paws, and she sat down, her rump against a ledge she’d found by walking forwards a bit.
She tried to calm herself, licking her paws clean and listening for Rose’s voice to return.
A few minutes passed, and she’d finally started to relax when she heard Rose call for her.
She slowly got up, twisting her ears to accurately follow the sound.
“There you are Mari! Gullveig, this is Marigold, one of my most prized pride members.”
She tried to locate the smell or sound of this ‘Gullveig’, but found she could not, and faced in the direction of Rose for assistance.
“You must excuse her, as you can see, she… well… cannot see.”
Rose chuckled at her own joke, before gently nudging Marigold in the right direction.
Marigold stretched a paw underneath her body, pressing the other forward and lowering her head in a bow.
“Pleased to meet you.”
She managed to mumble, nervously of course.
“Pleasure to make your acquaintance my dear.”
Marigold found the lionesses voice to be, comforting of sorts. It didn’t hold out of emotion and was deeper than the regular lionesses, but it was warm and welcoming, putting Marigold slightly at ease.
“Gullveig, if it’s no trouble, could Marigold smell your paw? It helps her get acquainted.”
The new Queen smiled, “Of course dear, if it helps.”
That voice again… she wondered if Rose felt the same way about it.
Marigold stepped forward slightly, leaning down towards a large paw that was kindly offered for her to smell.
She froze for a moment. Why was it so familiar? Like she’d met this lioness before… known her in another life perhaps.
She quickly straightened up, recognising she’d been down for too long.
“Apologies, got lost in my thoughts for a moment.”
She quickly said, suddenly feeling not as nervous as she once was.
She felt like she wanted to cuddle up against the lioness’ side and fall asleep as she groomed her. Much how a mother and cub would.
Gullveig seemed to pause before responding.
“Don’t worry about it, Marigold, it’s quite alright.”
Marigolds ears tilted forward at the new tone. Nervousness? Was Gullveig nervous? Why?
As questions flooded her mind, she heard Gullveig take a step forward.
“You… seem familiar…”
She mused, pressing her nose forward to sniff at the blind lioness’ fur. Feeling Marigold shrink as the gesture, she took a step back.
“My apologies Marigold.”
She said quickly.
“I got ahead of myself for a moment there, forget I said anything dear.”
Marigold nodded slightly.
“It’s alright, just got a bit nervous.”
She responded quietly, straightening up again.
“Well, I suppose we should be heading home, right Marigold?”
Rose suggested, seeming to pause before saying it. Her voice reminded Marigold that Rose was there at all, and she shook her head out of her thoughts.
“I suppose we should…”
She felt this odd emotion towards Gullveig, the same emotion she felt towards the broodmother who’d looked after her once she was transferred to Rose’s pride, but stronger. She didn’t want to leave, but she’d never say so out loud.
“It was a pleasure to meet you Gullveig, and, once again, congratulations on your new reign! Couldn’t think of a better lioness for it, don’t you agree Marigold?”
Marigold mumbled some words of agreeance, before turning to Gullveig to say goodbye, only to find the Queen pressing herself against Marigold’s side, a gesture of farewell normally only shared by pride members.
She couldn’t understand it, but it felt so incredibly right. She leaned into the gesture, her ears pinning back slightly in confusion, but acceptance as well.
She noticed she didn’t share the same gesture with Rose, hearing Gullveig only go near her to share words of goodbye then walking back into, presumably, what was her personal den.
“C’mon Marigold.”
Rose eventually spoke up.
Marigold nodded.
“Right… right, let’s go.”
She responded, grabbing the end of Rose’s tail for guidance through the territory again.
Once they were out and back into the plains, Rose instantly started speaking.
“Well, that was a bit strange, wouldn’t you say? I know you couldn’t see them but the expressions she was making were a bit odd, like she knew you from somewhere but couldn’t place from where. And that gesture at the end? Like she really did know you from somewhere.”
Marigold only mumbled in return, agreeing with the statements absentmindedly as her mind once again flooded with questions.
Why did she seem so familiar? Why was she so drawn towards her? Did Gullveig feel the same way? Was that why she rubbed up again her at the end?
All went unanswered, and Marigold was left guessing and confused.
She only was certain of one thing…
She wanted to go back.
