A seemingly endless expanse of forest that never seems to stay in one location, drifting along the land like a living creature, and someone goes missing? Well, sometimes they're not missing, just lost. It's easy to lose your way when the trees twist and bend at impossible angles, cliffs and caves appearing in places when you swear they weren't a second ago. They usually return to the Crypts eventually, the Hushwood is merciful like that, but sometimes they come back wrong. It's hard to place your paw on why they're not quite right. They look, sound, a d act the same, and no one else seems to notice, but but sometimes they'll just stare off into space, walk through seemingly solid objects, and their voice will distort. And, most oddly of all, sometimes they'll get injured - losing paws and tails and ears - and not notice. They'll continue to walk and climb and ear just as if they were fullbodied. Well, it isn't them, not really. It's just their shell being piloted by something else. Most often, it's a spell, forcing out the real them to make their body do something they wouldn't normally. Sometimes, though, it's worse. The real them is dead, and they're not coming back. The Timeless doesn't have them, the Hushwood doesn't, not even the Tainted Basin does. They're gone. Their body is empty, relying on muscle memory to know what to do, and even then the Hushwood is rejecting them.
