Duni means ‘smaller’ or ‘inferior’. Her mother chose the name because her daughter is a smaller version of herself, they are very similar in personality and appearance. She meant the name as an affectionate one, and will smack anyone who says anything bad about her daughter.
Duni is Maki’s final cub, born just before she retires from the hunting party, and Maki is a very doting mother. Little Duni is an only child, and admires her mother with every fiber of her being. She follows her everywhere, and her company helps to heal the rift left by her older siblings. Maki doesn’t get to see Duni’s first hunt, passing away in her sleep just before Duni’s second birthday.
Duni is heartbroken, no one can comfort her. Pili, the Shaman of the Hidden Valley Pride, assures her that spirits can go on after death, he’s even spoken to them during the annual visit of the wandering shamans, who taught his mother, and thus, him. When King Wema vouches for the truth of Pili’s words, Duni begins to calm down. If her mother is indeed watching her from a beautiful land of peace and plenty, then all she has to do is make her proud.
