Kurunzi means ‘to watch’. She caught Queen Faline’s eye at the market place, and the Queen recognized the intelligence and watchfulness of the young cub. Kurunzi is the name the Queen gave her, as she introduced the cub to her new pride.
Her adopted mother is Urujuani, who, ironically, Faline named her after. She is good friends with Urujuani’s most recent litter of cubs, who are a few months older than her.
When Urujuani passes unexpectedly, and the foster cubs she considers her littermates all leave to start new lives elsewhere, Kurunzi feels betrayed and abandoned. Faline is her saving grace, taking the young lioness under her wing and becoming her guardian. Kurunzi trains with Faline everyday, and considers being a broodmother herself one day, to be like her. And like Urujuani. Jamila and Mdadisi, the young princesses and Faline’s cousins, adopt Kurunzi into their friend group, and help her feel secure and loved again.
Much later, she has a daughter, the only cub in her first litter, Liokatazwa. Liokatazwa is a mouthful of a name, and it means ‘forbidden’. Liokatazwa’s sire was a tigon, himself a forbidden child between a lioness and a tiger. This is all just social rules, of course, little Lio is a perfectly normal cub, and not ostracized at all, she just has an unorthodox bloodline. She’s an incredibly kind cub, gentle and caring to all in the pride. When her cousin Iliangaza states her intention to leave the pride as an adult, Lio couldn’t let her go out into the world alone, and so decided to accompany her. The two young lionesses head off together, seeking adventure and watching eachother’s backs.

~Ugh, sometimes getting tangles out of your mane is such a hassle! Luckily, Kurunzi offers to help. She is magical at mane-detangling, and you are grateful for her aid. 2x
