Briar was the daughter of King Hawk and Rose. She was the first cub that the king actually accepted as his own. This meant that Briar, unlike most of her half-siblings, could stay in the pride instead of being abandoned. The pride believed that Briar was very lucky, but she thought otherwise. Yes, she was allowed to stay, but she was lonely. All of the other cubs, all her friends, were abandoned at The Giving Tree, far away from The Lake Land. Briar had no one to play with.
Soon the king accepted two more cubs -
Marble and
Buttercup. Briar hoped to befriend them both, but unfortunately Marble turned out not to be very friendly. In addition, the older she got, the worse she became. She even started bullying Briar and Buttercup, for which she never faced any serious consequences.
Briar wasn't thrilled with this treatment, but she didn't care much about it either. She knew, however, that Buttercup felt much more offended by Marble's behavior, so she often defended the younger lioness.
Briar grew, and even though the age difference between her and Buttercup seemed almost imperceptible over time, Briar still considered her to be her precious little sister. Buttercup didn't mind, she liked how protective Briar was of her.
When Briar's training began, Cotton Candy became her mentor. Around this time, she became friends with
Speckle, who was always there to help her with her training.
When Briar finished her training, she couldn't decide on her new career for a long time. She didn't know if she would be better as a fighter or as a huntress... Maybe a guardian role would fit her better? And what about caretakers? Briar could be one of them.
All her sisters already chose their roles, but Briar still couldn't decide. She decided to ask other lions in the pride what made them choose their roles, but it didn't help much.
Speckle and Buttercup noticed the problem and decided to help Briar. They even asked their Masters, Amethyst and Morning Glory to help. It was really nice of them, but Briar still couldn't decide, and the King seemed to be getting impatient.
Fortunately, Hawk was overthrown soon which gave Briar some more time to decide on her role.
Soon new lions joined the pride and their leader,
Spring, became queen of The Lake Land. She settled in quickly, but unfortunately the same couldn't be said about her companions. They did not get along with the older members of the herd, which led to arguing. Oleander and Spring tried to calm the pride, but they ended up being dragged into the fight. Everything just kept getting worse and worse, until Briar stepped in. At first Spring's side of the fight seemed to be distrustful of her, but soon they changed their mind. Briar took no side, instead she wanted to listen to everyone and understand both perspectives. She gained the respect of all of her pridemates, and soon she managed to end the conflict.
To honor her work, Oleander and Spring created a new role just for her - The Mediator. From now on, resolving conflicts in the pride was to be her job. Over time, Oleander even began to use her help in conflicts with other prides.
