daughter of galaxy neutron, granddaughter of redwood neutron and sister of silvermine, redfern was born with the singular mark scoria flux, with an opacity of 55%, slightly higher than her sister’s. when silvermine returned with her story and her name, redfern became jealous. why hadn’t her grandmother visited *her*? she knew she was a spare; her mother had birthed many cubs over her lifetime, but as her mother grew older she desperately desired one more daughter to continue her legacy, as she had continued her mother’s, and she was overjoyed when she received not one, but two daughters to continue her line in her home pride. but redfern, the second born, knew she was but a spare. a spare in the case that her elder sister should meet some untimely tragedy, an extra her mother loved but didn’t need. this filled her with envy, which was not helped when her sister returned with a story and a gift and a name. her envy and bitterness grew, until one fateful day she too decided to leave, and find her fate. only, fate found her. as she searched for the mine her sister had fallen into, a giant bird roared down and plucked her into the sky, talons digging into her back as she cried for home. twisting and clawing, she desperately tried to dislodge herself, to no avail. as she gave up and went limp, the sky erupted into a bright, blinding white. she did not open her eyes, thinking she had finally passed into her grandmother’s realm. as time passed, and the pain in her back did not subside, she slowly rolled over and opened her eyes to find that she was in fact still alive, and laying in a mess of broken, fuzzy, red ferns. they
must have cushioned her fall… wait, what fall? where was the bird? where was *she*? stumbling to her paws, she realized she recognized where she was. the broodmothers’ den. looking down to her paws to inspect the ferns, she realized they were gone. looking quickly around the den, she saw not a trace of them left, but… behind the rock by the entrance! a tail, a tail she recognized and did not recognize at the same time, a tail that was her mother’s but not, flicked around the rock and was gone, the top of an unnaturally red fern floating to the ground in its place. in an instant, she understood what had happened. her grandmother had come for her, too. she was just as loved and special and wanted and needed as silvermine. in that moment, she vowed never to share what had happened that day, choosing the name redfern for herself to her mother’s confusion, and promising her grandmother she would treat her sister with the love she deserved instead of the envy she didn’t. as she grew, she adorned herself with new markings, but always left the marking she shared with her twin as a reminder of her family.
