She is the primordial darkness in ancient Egyptian religion personified as a deity. She is coupled with the god Kek as her male counterpart and husband. She was often depicted as a snake or snake-headed human. The snake head symbolised protection, healing, regeneration, and was also possessed by the other Ogdaod females, Nunet, Hehet, and Amunet.
