King Lagan found Red Drum wandering alone, in the waning days of his rule. His pride depleted, and his lions scattered to the winds, he was eager to recruit, and the wild-eyed cub seemed eager to join. Red Drum's former pride had chased him off following several disasters that occurred shortly after his birth. They believed him to be a bad omen. Lagan saw an opportunity in a cub cursed with such ill-luck, and brought him home, planning to use the Red Drum's strange powers to bring disaster onto other prides. As time wore on, however, it became clear that Red Drum wasn't cursed himself, but merely drawn to the scene of disasters by some strange psychic force. Lagan, though disappointed, still saw the use of a prophet, and keeps Drum close as his second-in-command.
