Biography

Did that mossy boulder just… move? A pair of malachite eyes… the flick of a verdant tail… ah. It’s only Proverb, rolling over to achieve a better position for sunbathing. On a warm day in the Month of the Serpent, she materialized in Lorekeeper territory as if out of thin air. She promptly declared that she was ready to take a nap, found the coziest spot in the den, and fell asleep for the next several hours. When she awoke, it was to several curious eyes hovering over at her, asking where she came from and if she was intending to stay. She rose to her feet, yawned, stretched, and simply declared, “Whatever will be, will be.” Then she padded off in search of food.

Proverb’s sayings are definitely not original, but they tend to arrive at the perfect time. She utters truisms passed down from prior generations, repeating these worn-out phrases until they stick. Some lions find her grating, but most of the pride is charmed by her easy going nature. She doesn’t seem perturbed by anything. If a cub steals her food, she merely shrugs: “The early bird catches the worm.” If Drama and Stanza start bickering right next to her snoozing spot, she moves somewhere else: “Patience is a virtue.” To this day, none of the Lorekeepers have ever seen her upset. She is certainly a calming presence– one that other lions seek out when they are feeling anxious or afraid.

As an avid napper, Proverb often wakes up to birds perched on or around her. Because of this, she’s taken to sleeping in grassy areas so that it’s easier for creatures to find her and share her warmth. This has led to many moments of panic from her pridemates. They struggle to locate her in the undergrowth, often worrying that she’s wandered off or that she’s been eaten. It’s usually the cubs who discover her most recent hiding spot. They make a game of seeking her out in the underbrush, complete with rankings and prizes. Proverb thinks it’s hilarious and will often disguise herself in creative ways to give the youngsters a special challenge.

What goes around comes around. Proverb is a beloved member of the Lorekeepers. She even takes her wisdom to other prides, connecting with their leaders and returning with tales of what she has witnessed on her travels. She is certain to leave a lasting mark on the world once she journeys into the great beyond.
