Khari means ‘kingly’ or ‘like a king’. He is the first son of King Regani and Queen Lessa, the second born in the Queen’s third litter, her fourth child overall. Khari is not Regandi’s named heir, but he and his sister Erulan are often seen as the future of the pride.
Khari is made Suluhu’s apprentice as an adolescent, and is trained as the future Leader of the Royal Guard. His elder sister is the Heir Apparent.
Khari is very close with his mentor, Suluhu, and mourns greatly when he passes away. It is only some months later that he officially accepts the position of Leader of the Royal Guard. To celebrate his assention, the King and Queen offer him a gift, he may name it himself, and if it is in their power, they will grant it. Khari has never smiled brighter than that day, because Khari has a secret.
As a young lion, Khari fell head over heels in love with his friend Maadili, and she with him. The two kept it quiet, because it is unusual for a Royal Guard to take a mate. It has been done, at least twice that Khari knows of, and the law only prohibits a Guard from having CUBS, not a spouse. (Khari doesn’t actually mind that law, he thinks it sets a good example: all the cubs of the pride are his to guard, and they should all be protected equally, if his own offspring were in danger, he would be unlikely to not put them first.)
What Khari asks as his gift is simple: he wishes to marry Maadili, and not privately. He wants a royal wedding to celebrate their love. Erulan and Oäkmane are DELIGHTED to accommodate him, and the celebration lasts for almost a week. Khari and Maadili are very happy.
