Something changed in Kanai when Paka was born. No one understood why. He'd been king for just under two years when she was born, and suddenly, he was different. He was a fine leader before, if not a little shaky and distant. But when Paka was born, it was like a switch flipped in his head. He had never named his cubs before her. He always let the mother. It was unlikely he'd do much in raising them anyway, besides providing for them. But maybe it was because he had happened to be in the cave that cold evening she was born. He had been talking to his mother when it happened. He heard the soft mews of the newborn kitten and wandered to the mother's side slowly, sitting down beside her. And then he lowered himself all the way, laying at her side.
