Small bones crunched beneath her paws as SprintStep led her young cub through the scavenged savanna. He was young, barely old enough to eat meat, but that "barely" had begun to prove itself to be a problem.
After only four months, SprintStep's milk had begun to dry up. Her cub often spent hours kneading at her belly, but was left without any milk. If she did not find food soon, they would both join the bones on the ground, food for the next jackal or hyena to feast on. She couldn't allow that to happen.
They hadn't seen a herd in months, and even lone prey had gone unseen for at least a week. Only the scavengers remained, and even they seemed to evade her. Jackles always seemed to find a den, vultures flew beyond her reach, and as for the hyenas... No lone lioness would take on an entire clan by herself.
Crack!
She lifted her head, narrowing her eyes at the figure only a few yards away. A hyena.
It stared back at her, a cracked bone hanging from its mouth. It looked hungry, bones jutting out beneath the skin, and it's eyes seemed fixated on the cub swiping at the pebbles at her paws.
A deep, rumbling growl echoed through the air as SprintStep wordlessly warned the thing to stay away from her and her offspring.
The hyena seemed to think better of it, seemingly aware of the muscles that rippled under her pelt. It gave a low whine before backing away and choosing a different path. A part of her felt bad for the creature, and she supposed that was what kept her from chasing it down and making it into her next meal.
Instead, she sighed and nudged her cub in the opposite direction from the only sign of life they'd seen in days. Maybe soon they'd find a pride.
Or maybe soon, they'd join the bones.
