Kasi-Ya-Nuru's parents died during a wild fire that swept through her pride land when she was barely weaned. Trying to goad the herds away from the flames, they became trapped...it was a tragic loss of life.
A betrothed princess in their pride, Shujaa asked to raise her, arguing that her future mate was far too young to have cubs any time soon, and raising an adopted lioness would give her important skills for when she had heirs to take care of.
Her request was granted by her father, but only a few months later, Shujaa was told that her future mate had left his kingdom ahead of schedule, and no one was able to track him down.
Devastated, Shujaa collected her young daughter and went to her father, who told her simply that he could not allow her to find a new mate, and nor could he dissolve the betrothal - only her betrothed's now dead father had that power, and his sons could care less.
Disgusted with his lack of empathy, Shujaa waited until the middle of the night, then left the Kingdom, taking her adoptive daughter with her, in search of her runaway King.
Kasi-Ya-Nuru didn't have a super strong bond with her foster mother - the lioness cared, but was extremely focussed on her goals - but she had a tremendous respect and admiration for her, and when they came upon Bahati, she bonded instantly to this new friend.
She and her friend adjusted well to life in Achilia's pride, and they became good friends with Scout Dua.

Kasi-Ya-Nuru became pregnant to a handsome rogue. He had a mean look in his eyes, but he treated her with nothing less than respect. He trailed behind Achilia's travelling pride, but left once she gave birth and he saw that the cub was merely a female. It wasn't what he wanted, so he simply moved on.
Kasi-Ya-Nuru, however, was thrilled. She named her daughter Tabia, meaning 'nature'.
Kasi-Ya-Nuru means 'speed of light' in Swahili.
