Amukelani bounds over to you as you come to visit, wiggling and mrewling for your attention!
Amukelani wiggles around your feet playfully then proceeds to bat at your tail. Cute.
You greet Amukelani and he just smirks at you, licking some blood from his latest kill off his paw.
You were wondering what a weird squealing sound was coming from, and you investigate to find Amukelani batting around a young meerkat. It's still alive.
When seeking Amukelani to say hello, you noticed him playing with a dead warthog piglet.
Your heart almost skips a beat when you see Amukelani drag a tiny, dead lion cub in front of your feet. He dryly informs you it was a trespassing rogue.
Amukelani was born to Nobuhle and Meshindi during the Aphrodisia Time, and despite the feeling of love and joy in the air the aura surrounding the little cub was chilling. He was not a very talkative cub, and preferred to quietly watch those around him with unreadable eyes. Meshindi saw much of himself in the fiery cub, and it caused quite a stir in the Pride when he announced that Amukelani would be his heir. Miena was especially outraged - she had just given birth to a healthy male cub that appeared to be a carbon copy of his father, and had been positive that her son would grow up to control the Pride. Meshindi made it clear that Amukelani would be the next king, and after a near-violent argument Miena dropped the subject, but she would never quite respect the new heir. As for Amukelani, he appeared to be just like any other cub, and was always seeking out Mthandeni and Surana to play with them. As he grew older and his play-fighting became more and more brutal, Mthandeni and Surana began to avoid the cub and eventually refused to train him altogether. Shortly after, Amukelani's twin brother disappeared. The Pride could not find the cub no matter how hard they looked, and although Amukelani never showed any grief over his brother's disappearance, he was never suspected of having anything to do with the disappearance. As the Aphrodisia Time progressed the air of love and peace grew, but the uneasy feeling that came with Amukelani's presence only grew. He never said much - it was the unblinking way that he stared at other lions without speaking that made them uneasy. His first patrols with Donya went well enough - the young male was curious and listened well enough to Donya's instructions. When he became old enough to patrol on his own things started to become concerning to the other Pride members. At first he brought back carcasses, not unlike the other males did, although the creatures appeared to have been killed more violently. As time went on he started to bring back living things. They would never stay living for long - he would bat them around before they eventually stopped responding, and many Pride members would avoid him during these times. Sure, they were no strangers to animal death, but they had never seen a lion who appeared to relish other animals' pain as much as Amukelani. The Pride turned a blind eye towards Amukelani's cruelty, and lost themselves in the joy of the Aphrodisia, hoping that the fiery heir would grow out of it.
Amukelani matured during the Championships, and Meshindi took every opportunity he could to train with his son. He was less interested in making sure Amukelani was fit to lead and more interested in honing his own skills, and didn't pay any mind to Amukelani's brutal fighting style. Both of them came out of each fight owning more scars than before.
During the rise of the Great Serpent, Amukelani busied himself with exploring the Pride lands while his father worked with Anubis to defeat the Serpent. He found himself fascinated with the destruction the Serpent caused, and explored the chasms that opened in the ground. He stayed away from the Cthonic serpents, but after the Serpent had been defeated most of its minions were lost and wandered without purpose. Meshindi destroyed most of them, but Amukelani came across one that he made his own. He kept it a secret from the rest of the Pride, and with the return of the celestial lions Meshindi was too preoccupied to investigate Amukelani's mysterious outings.
Amukelani continued exploring the Pridelands while Meshindi interacted with the celestial lions. Towards the end of Amukelani's 4th year, Meshindi was seriously injured while fighting off a rival male. He survived, but at his age could not recover completely and was left with a severe limp. He could no longer travel long distances and was forced to give up leadership to Amukelani. The new King quickly established his own brutal reign, and Meshindi was too busy boasting about how well he had trained his son for leadership to take notice of how those who could not hunt for the Pride began to disappear. Amukelani continued to work with Apollyon, and his piercing stare left even the celestial lion a bit unsettled. After Amukelani and Apollyon defeated Apedemak, the new King was still obsessed with Apollyon's idea of cleansing the land through destruction. He continued to help the new Celestial King for a time, but eventually grew tired of helping a realm that had nothing to do with his own. He turned his attention to his own land, and set the savanna ablaze in his mission to rebuild the Pride into something stronger that it had ever been before.
When the war between angels and demons began, Amukelani had already destroyed much of the Pride's ancestral home. Food was becoming scarce, but Amukelani ignored the other members' pleas to move. He was convinced that the savanna would regrow into something more beautiful and bountiful than it had ever been before, and the sudden spread of the rabies virus was diminished around the Pride. However, a few particularly aggressive rabid hyenas still found their way into the Pridelands and it wasn't long before Amukelani was infected while fighting them off. The virus sent his mind into true insanity, and his conversations with others always quickly devolved into rambling nonsense. The Pride members actively began to fear their King, as he was extremely unpredictable and would snap at random times, sometimes seriously injuring other members of the Pride. While in his rabies-induced hysteria, he came into contact with the demon army and quickly rose among their ranks. He eventually overcame the sickness, but it had taken a toll on both his mind and body. He never regained his full weight back and the insanity never truly left his mind.
During the poaching times Amukelani fought back against the humans, but his goal was less about protecting the savanna and more about killing as many humans as he could find. He took advantage of the poachers' traps and instructed the hunters of the Pride to target animals who had been injured and killed. The Pride never worried about a lack of food, although many of the lionesses voiced their concerns about the future of prey populations. Amukelani also targeted orphaned cubs, determined to kill as many as he could. He told the Pride that his goal was to reduce future competition, but every lion knew he just enjoyed the killing. Word of his actions during the poaching months spread and before long nearly every pride nearby knew him as the Mad King, whose paws were permanently stained with the blood of cubs. By the time the poachers relented, the Mad King was widely known and their territory was avoided by many.
During the locust plague the Pride had become truly desperate, and Amukelani took any opportunity that presented itself to bring home a meal for his Pride. He was too absorbed in taking advantage of the chaos that the plague created to take much notice of a new cub that had been fathered by a king of a foreign Pride, and she quietly began to gather the lionesses to her ideals.
