"I think we should drop him at the giving tree," a male voice said.
"Me, too," a female replied, "He's…not what we're looking for."
"I'll drop him off for you once you wean him." The male replied. We're they talking about me? The world was dark, I hadn't opened my eyes yet. Who did these voices belong to? What were they going to do with me? I continued suckling and nuzzled the warm, fluffy object. A couple months later, when I could open my eyes, a big lion came over to my mother and said,
"I'll take him to the tree." What tree? My mother nodded and the male picked me up. I squirmed and mewled. That was all that I remembered of my parents. Now, I was 1 year and a half old, and still lived at the tree with the monkey and other cubs.
"Choose me!" The cubs cried out as other lions came by to pick a cub. They glanced at me often, but I was never chosen. I had become accustomed to living with the monkey, I usually was by myself. But one day a new cub came to the tree.
"Hi," a beautiful female adolescent my age said.
"Hey," I replied, looking at her gorgeus patterns.
"How long ya been here for?" She asked.
"Uh, since I was weaned," I said, looking away. She looked at me sympathetically.
"I'm sure we'll find homes," she said, "By the way, I'm Ocean Rise."
"I…uh. I don't have a name," I replied, embarrassed.
"Hm," Ocean Rise said, "How about Flint?" I looked at her.
"W-what?" I asked, confused.
"Your name could be Flint. You look like a Flint," She replied brightly. I looked at her and smiled.
"Sure," I said, looking at my fur.
"So, what do you guys do here?" She asked.
"Well….I just…I dunno," I said, thinking about all the times I sat here watching the other cubs play.
"When does the monkey bring food? I'm starving!" She said, ignoring my odd answer.
"Uh he brings food from his monkey friends at the Monkey Business shop every 4 hours. He usually brings meat chunks or small animals, scraps," I tell Ocean Rise.
"Oh, okay," She replies.
"I hope we find good prides," Ocean Rise said, shivering, "I don't wanna go to a pride where the king is horrible, or they fight. Or the king kills lions."
I nodded, "Don't worry, I'll make sure you find a good pride." She looked up at me, then shook the serious look off of her face, smiling.
"I wish I knew my parents," I said, quietly, staring off into the horizon. Ocean Rise stepped closer to me and nuzzled me, sad.
"All I know is that I wasn't what they were looking for. I don't remember how they looked," I told her.
"My parents dropped me off here because…" Ocean Rise took a deep breath, "Because…they thought I wasn't pretty enough." She looked away. I was confused, why would someone give away a gorgeus lioness like Ocean Rise?
"What did your parents think was beautiful? You're gorgeus," I said, then shuffled my paws, embarrassed that I had confronted her that I though she was beautiful. She looked at me, "Really?"
"Yes," I said. We had only known each other for a short time but we had grown to like each other. We talked for hours about what we wanted, what we remember, stuff like that until we fell asleep curled up next to each other.
The next day an elderly primal and young decorated lioness visited the tree. The stopped at us. They discussed about us, as if we weren't standing in front of them.
"We uh, we go together," I said, which caused them to stare at us.
"Well, we don't want the male," I overheard the female saying.
"Yes but the girl would be perfect for out breeding project--" The male said.
"What breeding project?" Ocean Rise interrupted.
"Huh? Oh nothing," The male said.
"I'm not going with you. I'm staying with him. And I'm certainly not going to a pride that's just going to be breeding me and killing the bad cubs," Ocean Rise said sharply. I stood next to her, ready to protect her.
"Not even for---" the male started.
"No! Now leave us alone you creeps!" She shouted, drawing attention to us.
The male bared his teeth and I stepped towards him, "Leave!"
"Fine, we never wanted your ugly sweetheart anyways." He said rudely. Ocean Rise stood up and ran towards him. I tried to grab her but couldn't. She pounced on the male's back and clawed him. He growled and threw her off. I grabbed Ocean Rise by the scruff and dragged her away into the underbrush being the tree.
"What were you thinking?!" I asked her. She looked away, upset. I heard the male growl and look for us.
"Where are you two lovebirds? Boy are you gonna get it," he said aloud, "I'm gonna take his sweetheart and…" I couldn't hear the rest of what he said. Ocean Rise sat up quietly and mouthed "We have to run". I nodded and we ran to the other side of the tree and bumped into someone.
"Oh! Hello. I'm King Penumbra," a big pieblad male said after we stepped back.
"Sorry, we were hiding from the Primal," I said.
"He's out to get us." Ocean Rise added.
"I can take you to my pride and we can hide from him there," the piebald said.
"Don't worry, I'm not like him. We'll take care of you both and you can do whatever you please there," he said.
Ocean Rise looked at me and I nodded.
"Yes, we'll come with you."
