Pelle had never been one for caring what the other kings thought as he prowled the lands with his snakes draped upon his back. It seemed every time he ventured further and further into the world he gained another slithering pet, this one more colorful and deadly than the last. What was it about him that they loved? What was it about them that he loved? Who knew. Perhaps it was their leathery skin or their soft, hissing tongues. Maybe it was the way their venomous teeth sank into their prey. They were undeniably mesmerizing to the king, the way they squirmed and lunged on the savannah floor. Oh, how his excitement grew when he heard the rattling of a nearby serpent. He couldn't explain why they'd been drawn to his blue and red marked pelt his entire life, and why he even felt… comforted by their presence upon his shoulders. Even when they withered to dust, turning to yet another ivory bone collection, he remembered their names. He remembered that strangers feared him and his slithering pets, but his pride worshiped them. He was the Snake King, ruling those who loved and feared him with nothing but a snake draped around his neck.
