Enuma Elis (nee Shard) came from a very long way away indeed, to join Wadi's Pride... many young lions heard of the mighty Son-of-my-Heart, and how he remained the Pride's sub-male even when his King had passed... he helped the massive pride to stay strong, until they'd chosen Wadi from among the potential Kings... and now... they chose Shard as their Sub-Male to replace him. ...oh, he didn't so much give them a choice as he /offered/... and young males of his stature did not come along often. He was... Well. A Hit, as it were, With the ladies. Not a surprise, given his skills during a time when they often went to watch the battling at the arenas! He was something else indeed! Even Wadi casts him appreciating looks!
For now, Shard remains a sub-male, and he's delightfully happy to be such. There may come a time, he reasons, when Wadi wishes him to step up, or Wadi wishes to step down... but in the fires of his heart he knows- his Destiny is to stand Strong, when the old King dies, and protect the pride, no matter WHO becomes king, next.
UPDATE: Shard's destiny was not to remain with the pride that looked to Wadi -- perhaps he wandered too far, perhaps he saw too tempting a female, perhaps he heard of Kamut the Phoenix, and knew that his time to come to release the old lion from his half-living bonds. Whatever the reason, when Enuma Elis came, Kamut laid down and released his spirit to join those of his ancestors, and the Queen, the Princess, and their huntresses acclaimed him, accepted him, and acquiesced to him, allowing him to take a new name.
