Walcott is named for Walcott's Quarry, the upper area of the Burgess Shale of the Stephen Formation- one of the most diverse and well-preserved fossil localities in the world. Walcott's quarry is well known for containing the most famous fossil collecting site; the Phyllopod Bed. It is located in British Columbia's Yoho National Park. Since it's discovery in 1909 by Charles D. Walcott himself, the Burgess Shale is best known as a snapshot of life in the Cambrian Period due to the sediment flow fossilization of it's ancient residents. The dark stained fossils reveal a countless number of soft bodied organisms, whereas prior our understanding came solely from the exoskeleton remnants of hard shelled fauna.
