Damasen had finally proven himself a worthy king to his still mourning pride. King Hyacinth's untimely demise had the elder lionesses grief stricken when he'd arrived, but Damasen had soothed them through their pain.
Hyacinth's queen's death was unexpected.

Her Majesty Rhodonite was a beautiful feline, her fur a delicate pink with ticks of white spotting. She had been adorned in the finest jewels and trinkets the pride had. She was kind and gentle and nurturing, and had been the deciding factor of Damasen's acceptance as king.

And this morning she didn't wake up.

Damasen led his pride to their burial site, watching as Rhodonite's fellow elders laid her to rest. Damasen himself was hardly present, thinking of how the kind lioness had welcomed him, even after her beloved king had just passed. He'd make her proud of his leadership.
"She is with Hyacinth now." He murmured as he pushed a playful of dirt atop her corpse.
"May her body feed the earth, and her soul find rest beside him."

Later, after Rhodonite's vigil, Damasen's pride huddled around him. He was their protector now, and as he watched the cubs and adolescents play, his heart warmed despite his grief. He'd never wanted to brutally take a pride. To kill a king and steal his mourning lionesses. He had nearly decided a loner life was better suited to him, until he heard Hyacinth had perished. As sad as the circumstances were, Damasen couldn't imagine a better pride to lead.
