When Ophelia was born, all her parents saw ahead of her was a bright future. One of glory and splendor, of praise and queenship. Their pride also adopted a similar mindset, treating her with regard even when she was but a young, immature cub, though she constantly thought of herself as being much less deserving of respect than even a normal lion her age.
To say the least, Ophelia was treated like royalty from the second she left her mother’s womb. Perhaps they treated her like that in hopes she would indeed become a queen some day. But, Why? How? It’s not like she was born into the role of royalty, her parents were merely high-ranking lions in their pride, not kings or queens.
Ophelia wouldn’t understand why she had such treatment until much later in her life.
The queen of the pride at the time was despised by most. Sarabi, an evil lioness that would stop at nothing to assert her iron paw over her suffering pride mates. The pride resented her, however, they were powerless against her face-to-face. But, when Ophelia was born, a ray of hope shone through. Her parents were respected and loved within the pride. When they started telling others of their hopes that their cub could bring a gentle future as queen, others began going along with it. It wasn’t long before they advertently treated her like royalty, much to Sarabi’s dismay. She took note of it, even when other pride members played dumb and denied it. They knew what they were doing, though. They were going to help Ophelia bring along the change to the pride that was desperately needed, and they were all in.
It was practically a background operation, and much of it was unseen by Queen Sarabi. The pride prepared her for the throne. As she grew, her mature, queen-like demeanor became apparent to those around her. She understood why she had to help take over and lead the pride; she grew with the understanding that her destiny in life was to become a queen.
All was going well. Ophelia was growing and getting stronger. More lions were becoming hopeful that she could take the throne every passing day.
But, all went to naught. A pride member was collecting information about the operation to make Ophelia queen, and they spilled it all to Queen Sarabi.
Under the cover of night, Sarabi came to Ophelia and chased her out of the territory, threatening to kill her if she did not flee. When the morning sun rose in the sky, the pride noticed Ophelia’s absence, and began to look for her profusely. When they could not find her, they believed she had gotten killed and dragged away. The pride was then sent into a heavy depression.
Ophelia sulked over the loss of her home, her pride, her friends and family. All they had ever done to prepare her for her time as queen was all for nothing. She too fell into a depression, she was all alone, there was nobody to talk to, to walk beside.
That was until she met a young male lion, about her age. She saw him over the span of days, but they would never speak a word to each other until after a week.
Afterwards, the two got to know one another quite well. Ophelia was quite flirtatious, but the young male never picked up a hint. She told him about everything that had happened in her pride, the queen, how she was prepared for royalty, the chasing. He listened as she told the tale, relating to her since he knew what it was like to live in a pride with a cruel leader. He had run away in search of solace, but he found out he’d much rather be by himself out in the world than in another pride. He encouraged Ophelia to go back to her pride and fight for the role of queen. After all, she was already more than prepared.
With his words of encouragement, Ophelia initiated some sparring lessons with the young male, learning a lot about combat in the process. As she felt she was ready to leave, she invited him to the pride, but he declined. She thanked him for all he had taught her, and she ran back to her old pride to challenge Queen Sarabi.
Sarabi was more than surprised to see Ophelia again. Now, she was a bit older, and perhaps weaker. Ophelia challenged the queen as soon as she arrived, not even stopping to greet her parents or friends first, but they watched. They watched as Ophelia and Sarabi fought. The battle was quite vicious, but in the end, Ophelia was victorious, and Sarabi suffered the biggest defeat one could ever experience. Death.
Ophelia quickly established her rule, gradually healing the pride, but some disruptions remained. A young lioness named Nyoka was going to take over the throne once Sarabi had retired, but now Ophelia was standing in her place. Ophelia had to hold a silent grudge, as she was obviously more desired to be queened than Nyoka. If anything, Nyoka was beginning to shape up to be like Sarabi, and the pride didn’t want to deal with that again.
The pride flourished under Ophelia’s reign. All her pride had prepared her for paid off - she was everything they’d hoped for. Kind, gentle, caring, and queen-like, of course. The pride had seen some of its best days in decades due to her, and there wasn’t a moment where her or her pride wasn’t loved.
