[Currently available on Netflix if interested!] The show documents the lives of crash survivors of fictional flight Oceanic 815 on a tropical island. As they continue to live there, it becomes increasingly obvious that there's something sinister brewing on the island and that they may never get home. Charlie, an ex-heroin addicted rockstar was played by Dominic Monaghan and was prolific for the first few seasons of running. It's mostly just drawing connections between Charlie and Hieronymous Bosch's art] Lost was a show that had many characters relating to famous painters, poets, and philosophers, with the most obvious being the character of John Locke who's name comes straight from famous philosopher, John Locke. It's evident throughout the show that the characters personalities and lives are connected in some way to the name that they share. In this case, Charlie Hieronymous Pace was a highly religious rockstar. Hieronymous Bosch was a painter known for his religious paintings and his, "macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell [Wikipedia]," are widely copied. It might be a bit of a stretch but Charlie is known for trying desperately to overcome his heroin addiction. A wrench is thrown in his progress when a smaller plane is found on the island teeming with dolls of the virgin Mary that are loaded with the stuff. I feel as though the writers were trying to connect Hieronymous' religious depictions with Charlie's struggle with addiction; it's almost as if he's suspended between heaven and hell with the heroin figurines being his trial. If he chooses heroin then he will be thrust into a nightmarish hell but if he chooses sobriety, then he'll be saved and allowed admittance into heaven.
