Despite being on opposing sides, Kalayo and Carmelita were quick to befriend each other. Kalayo was kind and friendly to the young cub soon after she was born and so their friendship was born; they were as close as brother and sister from then on.

It is tradition for lions of the plains to have a rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. This involves the males getting their faction symbol branded onto their right outer hind thigh by their King to allow them passage to a tree in the time of day that their faction is usually asleep—day for fire-starting, night for fire-fighting—which means that those of the opposite faction cannot attack them during their sacred journey.

When the males reach the towering, thickly rooted tree in the very centre of the territory, they are to jump as high as possible and scrape their forepaws along the bark in order to make their mark. They then stay there for the day/night to defend any lionesses who may be also taking the journey from any potential outside dangers.

For female adolescents, the rite of passage is slightly different. They are to get a sunflower to hold in their mouths for the journey if they are fire-fighting, and a plant known to the lions as a moonflower if they 'start fires'. The moonflower looks like a smooth, perfectly spherical orb, with a marbled pattern of various blue-greys on it. It is actually a berry and is attached to a dark blue-green stem and is edible.

Their journey entails walking to the tree with their respective flowers and, when they reach the tree, eating them. This will induce a strange effect on them, one where they start emitting a sickly sweet scent if they eat a sunflower and a bitterly sour scent if they eat a moonflower. They remain there for the rest of the night/day, which should be for as long as the scent lasts. It is against the ancient laws of the savannah to attack either a sleeping lioness of a different pride or a lioness or lion who is either freshly branded or carrying a flower as this indicates that they are doing this sacred rite of passage.

Sunflowers grow in a field in a far corner of the plains and moonflowers in a field in the opposite corner. In these fields are three major prides which are said to have been around since the fire-fighting and fire-starting factions have been around, their Kings descended from the very first kings. They are the largest prides and hold certain dominion over their respective factions—each year, the next major pride is chosen in each faction to have their King represent it.

All of this is relevant as the fire-starting side decided to launch a major attack upon the fire-fighting side by attacking their sunflower field and the three prides within it. Sinistre was the second eldest son of the King of one of the fire-starting major prides and so they conferred and all of the fire-starting lions within the pride banded together to aid them. The attack began with using a certain material made from the moonflower's skin to refract the sun onto the dry sunflowers, setting them alight. After the sunflowers had burned to ashes, the battle began between those who had survived the fire and the attackers.

Kalayo locked himself into combat with Sinistre after waking up to find out what was going on. After a long battle, he ended up accidentally pushing his King into the flames; Hermione had also showed up and had given Sinistre's father a lethal blow which ended up killing him as well. And so it was; the fire-fighting side was victorious and Kalayo found himself to be the King of his own pride.
