The Quiet God

They said his hunger was cavernous.

Born of the desert sands and married to the sky, he was the chosen of Vesuvius. The heir to a devastating burden - of fury that swallowed three cities in a night - his was a silent passion. It found root in tombs and haunted bones, whose jaws yawned wide to greet fiery dawn. And yet, there was peace.

So as in life, in death there is equilibrium. Time, the bane of all beings, could merely be kept at bay, and never stopped. And so war was inevitable. When his great sandstone form rose, the very wastes trembled and the sky darkened. Swallowing sound and hemorrhaging ash, his flayed ribs vented cinders on every purposeful breath. None were left when the night came. So it goes; picking apart fragility like ghostly veins.
