The Lions of Whistling Brook

Millenia ago, under the guidance of the stars, the Great River split into eight smaller brooks spread across the plains, accompanied by two lions each. Each pair journeyed to the end of the brooks, where they dried up, and made their territories there, starting prides named in honor of the precious water source. These blessed streams were said to provide each of the new pride’s with ample food and water so long as the Great River still fed the smaller brooks. It stayed that way for many, many sun cycles, until one fateful dry season, when one of the prides, The Lions of Rocky Peak, took over the Great River’s mouths, damming off the openings to the other pride’s territories. They had decided that, since they were the closest in proximity to the Great River, that they should have hold over where the water runs. All the other prides were distressed so they each sent one of their male lions to confront the Rocky Peak pride. It ended in warfare, and the death of the king of Rocky Peak at the paws of the other males. From then on, it was decided that each of the eight prides would get a chance to patrol the Great River’s mouths, to ensure there was no damming off of or infiltration of the pride’s water supplies. Every full moon the kings of each pride would meet at the Great River, discuss ongoing events in their pride, and settle any disagreements in order to keep the peace and please the River Goddess, the lioness who created the Great River to begin with.
Like this, the prides lived in harmony with each other. It wasn’t until very recently, after the kinging of Jirachi, the forty first king of The Lions of Whistling Brook, when the balance began to shift again. Loyalties were coming into question between the prides, and with a new Royal Advisor by Jirachi’s side, the times of peace may be teetering once again . . .
