The First Hunt
Daenerys was on her first hunt with the pride. She was a bit nervous, as she was the newest lioness to be acquired by Ilyen. She wanted to impress the lionesses she was with. Especially Slate, who was Ilyen’s first lioness. She had come over from Pyriel’s pride to help show him the ropes, and he loved her for that. He looked up to her as a mentor, and a friend.

Ilyen wanted them to bring back a gazelle for the snake. They had time, but it was always best to turn in quests early so they actually got done. Gaia, Slate, and Daenerys were going to check around the watering holes, while Tamar and Tara were searching the grasslands. “Both Tamar and Tara have proven themselves, they can be off on their own without much assistance. More importantly, they work as a team.” Slate’s words run through her head as she hid in the grass surrounding the water.

Dany was not used to working as part of a team. When Ilyen had found her in the shrublands, she was alone, the way she liked it. She had freedom to do as she wanted, to go wherever the wind took her. She was able to catch smaller creatures, enough to stay fed. She had never really thought about taking a mate. However, there was something about Ilyen. He didn’t look impressive at first glance, but he won her over with his roar, physique, and mane.

He brought her back to the den, and no other lionesses were there. As they romped and played together that night, she thought perhaps that she was his only mate.

She was naïve…

The other lionesses returned from an overnight hunt the next morning. As they entered, Ilyen sleepily introduced their newest member.
She shook the memory from herhead. Focus, Dany. Put your mind on the hunt. She saw Slate across the pool, vigilantly taking everything in. Gaia was to the right, crouched and ready to pounce on cue.

Suddenly the wind picked up and sent the most delicious smell past Dany. She had sulked over breakfast after finding out about the other lionesses, and not eaten as much as she should have before a hunt. She fought against her instinct to pounce immediately, and looked to Slate for guidance. Slate gave the tiniest shake of her head, this was not the prey they searched for.

Dany waited, and waited, and the smell grew more tantalizing. After some time she could take it no longer. She prepared to attack whatever the source of that delicious smell was, crouching lower in the grass than before. Then she leapt on the unsuspecting nyala that had come for a drink.

I can take this down on my own, that will prove my worth, she thought during the attack. She swiped and bit at the poor creature, until she heard an angry roar and felt herself get pushed aside. Gaia and Slate jumped in to quickly take down the creature, before turning to growl at Dany.

“This was not the prey we were sent to collect,” Slate stated angrily as Dany whimpered. “Now we’ve alerted the surrounding area to our presence because you couldn’t be bothered to wait!” She paced around the fresh nyala carcass. Ultimately, they all knew the food could not be wasted, it needed to be brought to the hoard for either the pride to eat, or sell to the monkey.

Slate sighed, “Let’s get this home, we’ll try again later.”

As they dragged the carcass back to the den, Gaia
offered a smile and whispered “You’ll learn soon enough.”
