When Smokestar reached retirement age, he called a meeting, lining up his three eldest sons for the choosing of his heir. All three were primal variations, as none of the unmutated cubs he had sired had made it to adulthood or were worthy enough.

Silvertongue stood tall, the Smilus male rather smug and almost sure he would be picked. However, Smokestar walked past him, telling him the Shamans he consulted had not chosen him. The giant lion was rather disappointed, baring his teeth in a snarl and lunging at his father before being stopped by some unseen force.

Shaded Curse was next in the lineup, the rather sizeable primal lion sitting tall without projecting himself. He was not picked either, as the Shamans had been informed that the large male's talents lay as the guardian. Being the reasonable lion that he was, Shaded Curse simply nodded and bowed his head. It was not his time.

Next was Arctic Fire, a handsome Ferus with a confident yet kind demeanor. He sat a little further behind his older brothers, almost certain they would be picked. However, he was surprised when Smokestar stopped in front of him, the king smiling warmly.

"I have consulted many shamans, and the spirits with whom they communicate have all pointed to you, my son," Smokestar said for all to hear, his voice raised yet gentle. The air around him crackled, and Arctic Fire seemingly lost consciousness, though he remained sitting up. When he awoke he felt more powerful, his body and mind connected to the spirits that Smokestar had referenced.

In his mind a spirit spoke, giving him the name Sparkstar. He watched as his father grew old and grey(-er), the strength of the king passing from father to son in a brilliant display of light. The Underworld was his now, and he vowed to make it the safest for all who sought sanctuary from him.
