Through the marsh and undergrowth, a pride lived long ago. They were mangy, a mess, their former Queen having died of a vicious parasite infection. The small collective of lions were lost and unregulated without a leader to guide them, slowly starving as prey grew scarce in winter months.

When spring returned, only a handful of the pride was left. Many succumbing to their demise. Little did they know, their hushed and murmured prayers uttered during the long, dark nights had been answered.

A lone adolescent, wandering to find purchase in these unforgiving lands. Addax, the name given by his father, after the antelope that roamed the dry plains he grew into. He had no trouble throughout his travels, his bulky frame and sharp demeanor made all scurry out of his path.

And then, it was summer, and Addax had found himself in a bog, brown water splashing with every footfall. It was harsh, unlike anything he'd experienced in his life of luxury, and he was determined to conquer it.
