Ørÿx's Den

The sun was bright. It walkways was, in these parts of the savanna. Young Oryx blinked against it until their eyes adjusted, looking out over the village. What was the commotion about? Everyone was gathered around a lion, chattering and stamping their paws excitedly. Oryx pushed their way forward, their curiosity driving them. Standing in the middle of the crowd was a tall, lean lion with a sharp, kind face. There was immense wisdom in those eyes, and Oryx wanted to know ALL OF IT. The lion looked down at Oryx despite the crowd, a small smile flickering across their face. “Hello, little one. My name is Tefnut.”

Oryx sorted herbs in the cool shade of their hut, counting and naming as they went. Honeybush, buchu, aloe. The beads beside the door clattered as someone stepped in. Oryx turned around, smiling in welcome as their mentor, Tefnut, entered the room. Tefnut looked at the herbs on the floor and returned the smile appraisingly.

Oryx was buying herbs in the market, looking through the assorted plants carefully. Their tail flicked back and forth in concentration. It bumped into another customer. “Sorry!” Oryx mumbled, for the first and only time not thinking to give this lion a second thought. But ae smiled at them curiously. “No worries! What are you looking for?” With a slight chuckle, ae added, “I may also be something of a shaman myself! My name’s Woodpecker, what’s yours?”

Oryx holds back tears as Tefnut looks at them appraisingly again for the last time. Their wisdom-full eyes had grown so familiar. Oryx wasn’t ready to see them go. But they were. “You are ready.” Tefnut promised, their voice as sure as if they had said, ‘the sun will rise’ or ‘the wind will run’. As if it was sure, not to be disputed. “This village knows you with respect now. Remember what I’ve taught you, little one. Never lose yourself.” And they walked away, towards the far horizon.

Today, Oryx sits in the village square, chatting with whoever comes by and doing simple chores, sharing stories and meals with whoever wishes to join them. Woodpecker relaxes next to them, aer’s tail flicking to the beat of faraway music. Oryx is happy.

A little about my pride and the story above here! Woodpecker uses ae/aer pronouns and Tefnut(little headcannon) and Oryx both use they/them. My pride features the hardworking lions in a small village south of some of the larger oasis cities. Here, they rely on magic and wits to get by. I’m still working on lore a bit, but I’ll probably put more where when I get it. Gimme any suggestions PLEASE.
